im sorry but i dont think anyone can comment on what it's like to work in retail, unless you've worked in retail! we deal with a lot of shitty people, and yes ok we can just go and get a new job, but there are some perks in retail. it's just we remember a lot of the shittyness coz it's unbelievable how stupid people can be.

and no it's not our job to pick up clothes from the floor. leaving clothes on the floor is disrespectful! would you leave ur own clothes on the floor? if you do then you really are a dirty pig who needs manners!

9. Please do not try to socialise with me. I am at work. I am busy. I only smile and talk back to you because I am paid to do so.
I though this brightens up the shop assistant's day? They seem to gleam at me when I dare ask them how THEY are back when they're forced to ask me how I am.

I ask "long hours today?" as they are playing with the cash register/eftpos machine or bagging my clothes and they will happily tell me specifically how long their shift is, plus some additional detail about their personal life that gives me insight to how tired they'll be at the end of the day.

So I thought they didn't mind the socialising?

Gee 12 hr thurs night shifts..thats got to hurt! Especially if you ahve all those annoying teen girl prats who just go oo look at me just try this on, and then not put it back. AND its worse when you are just trying to look at clothes and they wont fucking move out of the way, coz they are just window shopping and you are acutally interested in buying something there and then. Especially if they have those huge dam shoulder bags-the schools should ban those seriously! They're a nusiance in many ways-bad for back health, bad for people on public transport who have to crawl over the bags just to get out of the fucking bus/train, and bad coz they are so big and 'fashionable'--how....hm wont be fashionable when htey have a screwed up back!

When i shop at clothes stores, which isnt often coz of lack of funds, I hate it when the staff dont come and see if you want something, but I love it when they are polite and ask how your day was and start up a conversation with you at the check out. Its nice.

Perhaps, if such events were an anomaly and not a normal occurance. Unfortunately, this job proves how idiotic humans (more specifically teenage girls) are. Trying on many sets of clothing and then leaving it on the floor without buying anything is quite annoying for anyone in my position.
what do u care if they dont buy anything. you get paid either way. same applies to the other stuff that causes extra work for you like leaving stuff on the floor. you get paid for ur time, no loss to you.

Do you know how much I love customers who ask me how I am after I've asked them? Or the customers that tell me to have a nice day/weekend. Omg I want to run and hug them! lol

Lol, what? Sizes differ immensely, even within the same brand. Seriously, I have two pairs of Lee Jeans, one black, one Indigo. The indigo is a 77s but fits looser than the black ones which are a 79s.

I saw this happen at Parra SES... don't tell me you work there?!
I was in the line, when this middle-aged couple came in trying to return something without a receipt and then the guy was screaming at the top of his lungs saying in a terrible asian accent that it wasn't fair. Acutally, it was pretty funny.

lol seriously what SES do u work at?

I also hate it when parents let their kids tear clothes off racks and then leave them on the floor. ARGH.

Even more so when the kids have grubby fingers and totally fuck up the clothes.

and yes, nice customers who are understanding and kind... <3 them!!!

A couple of points on this thread (I can't remember who said what for the most part, and cbf quoting)...

1. To the person who said that customers shouldn't have to put shit back: you are an idiot, or at least incredibly rude. I agree with Tulipa: It is common courtesy. If you take something off one rack/shelf/table and don't want it, put it back. It takes 10 seconds of your time, but it takes someone in the shop 15 minutes to put everyone's shit back for them (Borders Bargain site is much the same).

2. I like it when customers have a chat with me. Makes the day interesting. :)

3. Yes. Customers should read the damn signs and/or prices/dates on their receipts and not ask stupid questions or whinge because they can't read.

well, I think I must be mad, because I personally LOVE dealing with people. I used to work at a cinema, and whenever I was on floor and given the option of cleaning cinemas or standing on gate (ripping stubs, announcing when a theatre was open) I would always take gate. all of my other coworkers thought I was insane, since pretty much every other person there would choose cleaning over gate anyday, but in all honesty I don't mind dealing with people.

I mean, yeah, I'd get infuriated whenever someone started yelling at ME because someone down at candy bar gave them the wrong ticket, or because a cinema is taking an extra-long time to clean, or because projection has made the sound "too loud". but generally speaking, people aren't too bad. I loved it when an old lady would comment on how refreshing my "friendliness" was, or when a tiny kid would say "mummy, I made a friend!" after I asked him how the movie was. I loved the random conversations you'd strike up with people who are waiting for their session to start. for me, dealing with customers is one of the few brightsides of working (apart from bringing in the dough of course)

yes, i know, i'm a freak

i dislike how ses has become such a trashy place. also the thing that really ticks me off about it is not the quality, price or whatever; but like how the staff are quite unfriendly. like what the orginal thread person said.. talking and insulting the customer.. i mean thats just plain rude. that is all:D

malfoy.. just out of curiosity, where do you work now?? btw my friends's friend worked at ice and got a heap of clothes every now and then, sounds pertty good:p
