how far away do you think someone should be from their uni before considering living on or moving next to the campus?

Anyone can live on campus if they want (as long as they get in)

I have friends who live <10km from uni and still live on campus for the 'uni experience'.

yeah, but forgetting all that - when do you think it will have a negative effect if they live too far away (eg. less study time). for the unis I am considering it will be something like:

(to uni)
bus - 15 min
train 50 min
bus - 10 min

(back home)
bus - 10 min
train 50 min
bus - 15 min

in this case would it be more beneficial to live on campus due to transport time and costs? only considering those factors

That's not too bad tbh :p
If I catch public transport then it's about the same for me (maybe a bit more).

From what I know of things such as college and even just living at the apartments at uni, you will probably not make up that studying time and + it's a lot more expensive (if you're worried about that)

In terms of transport costs, you should consider buying a concession mymulti which is $23-30 a week (depending where you live)

Look up the MyMulti thing so you dont have to buy 3 different tickets?

A mymulti 2 pass costs $27 a week. On-campus living costs at least $150 a week. That 50 min train ride isn't wasted time as long as you're studying while you wait for your stop, think of it that way

Even better if you have a train buddy that you can chat to on the train rides.

I live in Bankstown. If I move to Macquarie Uni, there is NO way I am not moving.

Really depends but usually when it takes 2 hours to get there unless you want to drive to and from. It's really a personal choice unless it exceeds 2 hours of course.

i'd say anything more than 90 mins one way is too much time wasted in a day.

Forgot to add, it also depends on your course as well. If the hours are demanding then it is best to live on campus of course.

Not sure if you're on youth allowance or not, so I don't know how you plan on paying for this accommodation. On campus is quite expensive and you only get living away from home allowance and rent assistant if your uni is more than 90minutes away by public transport.
