there are plenty of courses at low ranking uni's with UAI cut offs around 60~. if someone can't put the effort in to, getting a UAI of 75-80~. No University should accept them.

UAI is not truly indicative of academic capabilities for starters, and the cutoffs are based on demand (or lack thereof).

This idea is just another example of elitism. To limit people's scope of education is pathetic. There is nothing good about a system that only accepts the top 1%. Australia is 3rd when it comes to the amount of Universities in the top 100, so the standards are still existent. If people don't belong there, they will realise this eventually (after course failures, etc).

I've heard that in the UK they have a sort of "finishing school" system, where if you arent sure exactly what you want to do, you can trial courses from different areas. Perhaps this could be beneficial to Australia - giving a few years of optional education in areas of interest - without the four year degree that people dont want to change because they already have to pay HECS on it.

And base it in a university environment; perhaps some graduates can give a few years of teaching - given that the courses are all introductory.

I don't know. It is just a thought.

Rankings have nothing to do with the standards of undergrads though

Noone is talking about only accepting the top 1 % so that's a strawman. If you have marginal students the standards don't stay high they tend to get pushed down to lower the failure rate.

uai isnt an indicator of intelligence at all. heaps of people got higher uais that me because i did no study except the night before all my exams and in the case of industrial tech, that morning. got band 6 in that though. got the uai to get me into the course i wanted with about 2% effort and im exactly where i want to be. without getting a uai that even remotely resembled my ability
