hey everyone,
we have this assessment where we have to find and test 3 of our own natural indicators....any ideas ppl...wat did u use at skool? and how did u perform the experiment??
please help!

We didn't do three. Half of our class did hibiscus flowers while the other half did red cabbage indicator.

We cut the red cabbage into thin strips and placed them in a large beaker. Then we filled the beaker with water and brought the water and cabbage mixture to boil. Once the water had become a deep purple colour, we turned off the bunsen burner and let the mixture cool. Then the cabbage was extracted and the purple solution left in the beaker was the indicator. Although you need to put it into an eyedropper bottle before you use it.

We tested various household substances such as detergent, vinegar, juice, baking soda solution, etc.

For hibiscus flowers, it's the same process.

We used red cabbage and an unknown type of flower.
If u can't find 3, just use any of the flowers with brightly coloured petals you can find in the school.
Use mortar and pestal to grind the flower petals into a fine paste.( you can add some methanol and sand to make it easier for grinding)
Add some water to it and stir the mixture.
Then just filter the solution.
All u need is just the juice.

If u r not sure of how would your natural indicator change colour.
Just test it with some acids and bases you already know, eg vinegar, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide etc.
Once u know the colour change in acids and bases, then u can use it to test the substances with the unknown acidity or basicity.
