withoutaface: That doesn't compensate for the private public gap, which magically seems to disintegrate at uni.

It could be argued that the fact that students at a public school aren't necessarily being negatively affected in the long term because they are gaining independent learning skills which are useful later on. Also if the entire education system was "socialised" parents would still attempt to top up their childs education through purchasing outside tutoring, thus reestablishing the gap.
