which subject should i drop?

i have to drop 1 subject for HSC because i'm doing badly in chem and ancient
I'm failing more in Chemistry..........i'm in the bottom 10 for my ranking..which is really bad......

I have to choose between chem and ancient history for my 10units in yr 12


Q. i heard that it's really hard to do well in Ancient history because it has low scailing...........is it true? I can't decide between chem and Ancient because chemistry has high scailing.

and is doing 10 units HSC a disadvantage?

Drop Chemistry cause that is your worse subject and Ancient doesn't have that bad scaling since it had an average scaling of 25/50.

Well you should never choose a subject according to scaling (okay, so maybe I do that ). But in most cases, scaling will worse against you. If you really like History, then stick with it. Think about the future, can you really see yourself studying all those hours on a subject you hate?

You say that you're failing Chemistry more, but are you sure you can't improve on it anymore? What are your positions and marks for it?

And in response to the 10units question, that is really how you look at it. Some people see 10 units as an advantage because it gives them time to focus on the 10units that will ultimately counts towards the UAI. But some people see it as risky business because ALL 10 units count and there's always the possibility of 'what if i stuff up in one exam?' sort of thing. It's really how you look at it and how confident you are with yourself and your subjects. I know that both my sisters did 10 units and both scored high UAIs (95+)

I can't comment on chem vs ancient, but re: the 10 units thing:

There is no point in keeping the other subject if you are failing it now, because you'll just have to work hard at it for nothing, really. Usually I think that doing 10 units is a bit risky and having a backup is better, but there's no point in doing an extra 2 units that you're fairly certain you're going to fail anyway...



Random question: with the 10 units thing, do you have to actually pass them, or not? Eg if you have 10 and fail 1, do you fail year 12 or something? Or does it only affect your UAI and stuff?

By fail do you mean a shit mark or actual failing where you don't hand in assignments? If you get a shit mark you get a shit UAI. If you fail one of the subjects you are ineligible for a HSC and thus a UAI.

Just pick that one that you think you'll do better in. So just take into account whether or not you actually like the subject, whether or not you'll be able to improve and so forth.

As for the 10 unit thing, I'm pretty much against it. I'm really much an advocate for 11 or 12 units - though I lean more towards 11 units. It's just that having 10 units puts alot of pressure on you to rank in the top 10 in everything and when you're in a high ranked or selective school, that's basically impossible.
