Which uni for B Commerce? (1 Viewer)

Hey BoSers,

I was expecting to get an ATAR of between 80 and 85. In anticipation of that I put down Macquarie University B Commerce (2011 cut-off: 83.60) as my first preference. Throughout the year, I have visited Macquarie to hire books for Extension History. I've always liked the atmosphere of the place, plus its the closest of the universities in Sydney to me.

My actual ATAR was 95.05. Now I'm seriously considering whether I should instead opt for UNSW, USYD or UTS - on the recommendation of several workmates and teachers. I received a Band 6 in Business Studies and Economics, plus a Band 5 in English Advanced, so with bonus points (if any) I think I have made the 2011 cut-offs for each of those universities.

I have only ever been to UNSW for their Open Day, and didn't like the atmosphere as much as Macquarie, but first impressions can be misleading I suppose. USYD and UTS I have never visited.

I will definitely be going to USYD and UTS on January 4, but can anyone offer any advice to me as to which uni I should pick?

Agreed UNSW definitely! But I think the cut-off for UNSW is 96.7 but still try! double check 'cause I'm 100% sure.

Not too sure where this originated from, but this does seem to be consensus within tertiary circles. Mind you, I'm not too sure how large that gap is so OP, I think your decision will come down to personal taste. Going to the Info Day would be a great way to decide which university fits you.

Well first thing's first, you've good enough to consider all unis.

Other users have said already, visit the info days and see which uni atmosphere suits you the most. UNSW is generally considered to have a superior commerce degree but you're still undergrad so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

If I were you, then I'd make the most of the ATAR and go with one of the unis you mentioned. Even if the course content is the same, the reputation of the uni and 'stigma' attached to it won't be. The higher cutoff courses typically attract the mentality that it's better because that's where the high performers go, etc.

If all you care about is course content however, I'd say Macquarie is meant to be one of the most reputable at least for accounting. Finance is better at UNSW though. But in the end, if you work in any of these specialisations/fields, you'll be doing further study anyway whether it's CA, CFA, etc.

Hey I hear this from people quite a lot, but can anyone please clarify to me why this is so? What are the specific things that make it the best?

It's the general impression. I'd say it's a combination of prestige, rankings (though this doesn't matter), teaching quality and the quality of students.

Don't feel that you have to pick a course with the pressure of needing to "use" all of your ATAR. If you are considering the B Commerce, think about what majors you want to do and compare the different programs to see which uni offers you the most interesting subjects etc that aligns with your interests/career intentions etc. You should also consider the other aspects of your university experience: work/internships, student societies, extracurricular activities, social life, convenience, etc etc.

As a Mac commerce student, I vote for Macquarie

Agreed, you have to be committed to do well in uni. Not so much about being smart anymore since everyone is on a pretty level playing field in terms of ability. If I were the OP I wouldn't be too worried because at the end of the day, marks don't matter that much as long as you have the piece of paper at the end. What really does make a difference is whether or not you get 'involved'.

USyd or UNSW obviously. Whichever is more convenient. I can get into UNSW Comm easily with bonus points (as can you) but I'll probably choose USyd even if I have to do Economics instead because it's closer/less stairs/less international students (even though that will decrease with the high AUD).

Why would you be daunted by UNSW? The cut-offs are artificially inflated from bonus points anyway.
