Im so confused by those whitehaven coal signs at usyd saying campus is closed for mining. And Greenpeace facebook page actually claiming usyd was closed today.

Can anyone explain whats going on?

I wasn't at uni and had to read several statuses and an Honi Soit article to understand what was going on.

Ah so that's what it was about.

Honestly, the stupidity I witness at uni everyday is enough to make my head explode.

I don't have a problem with it, to be honest. The things they did on campus were within reason. If they said the campus was closed like it actually was closed (on Facebook), i wouldnt agree with it but doing it on campus to make a point is fine.

"Recently on campus there has been a lot of talk about how the university is "stupid" to have ~AU$1,000,000 in stocks in Whitehaven Coal, an Australian company that made nearly AU$1bn this last financial year.
Alright. Let's talk about this. I understand that there is a compulsion to support climate change action but this is not how to do it. Quite frankly, if the university were to sell its stocks, somebody else would simply buy them - you are literally not stopping anything. What you ARE doing is absolving yourself of blame, which I think is somewhat pathetic. If you're all for action on climate change, that's fine but honestly stop getting a sanctimonious 'moral release' from thinking you know more than anyone who doesn't support your antics.
Your whinging will not fix the climate. Your pathetic little demonstration last week hasn't changed anyone's mind, it's made you look like a ****wit. If you want change, do a science degree and find a way to make renewable energy a more effective and profitable option (and don't even debate this unless you know what you're talking about). I'm so sick of people with arts degrees just thinking they have a monopoly on all knowledge. You don't. You are a pretentious ****nut.
And of course, the greatest irony is that you go into your classes at uni, your house or whatever you call home and turn on the light. That light is powered by electricity, that is generated by the burning of coal, a natural resource that is so conveniently provided by companies like Whitehaven.
Good day, and no, I won't sign your damn petition on Eastern Avenue. You are literally a child. Grow the **** up."

Someone wrote this on a usyd fb page (with expletives, but I'd rather not have those here :p), and did agree with it quite a bit (a lot, actually). With the government cutting funding to universities, they've gotta make money somehow, and investing in a very profitable company is a good way of doing just that.

There are plenty of things that are profitable - not just coal. The post is a load of shit and the second half is scientifically ignorant.

Of course there are, and if there was a company that was performing even better then by all means the university should be buying their stocks (not because of what they sell, but rather they can make more money). But selling a coal company's stocks just because they sell coal isn't going to solve climate change.

I assume this is what you're talking about which is scientifically ignorant: "And of course, the greatest irony is that you go into your classes at uni, your house or whatever you call home and turn on the light. That light is powered by electricity, that is generated by the burning of coal, a natural resource that is so conveniently provided by companies like Whitehaven." Care to explain why it is so?

From "your whinging..." till the end. Renewable energy has been shown to be pretty much as cost effective as coal and it's ignorant to say go get a science degree and make it more efficient. Fact is, the technology is easily good enough but misleading information prevails because the climate change deniers only need to make the public doubt the science while scientists need to actually provide meaningful evidence. Unfortunately, this keeps us from moving to better sources of energy.

As for the last paragraph, it's ignorant because it's effectively saying "you're doing using something bad so stop pushing for everyone (including yourself) from using something bad and move to something that's not bad" or "since everyone is doing something bad, we should all just keep doing this thing that's bad". To me, that's not acceptable. It's also implying that people power their homes only from electricity that's from coal which is simply not true. Plenty of people use other renewable sources of energy, particularly solar - let's not forget hydroelectric in Tasmania and South Australia's very high level of renewables.

I should also mention that this type of "whinging" is what stopped use of TEL (ie lead) in fuels, it's what stopped the use of CFCs in aerosols, it's what stopped use of lead in pipes. So even if the whinging doesn't "fix the climate" - in fact, we can't fix the damage done - it can lower further damage done.

To me, it's not all about solving climate change by divesting but rather, showing that university doesn't support mining activities that have adverse effects on the environment. Being a university, it should have some vision and divesting is a good start to that. Plus, coal use is probably going to decrease some time soon as other countries move away coal from - and remember, most of our coal is exported.
