Why are sciences and mathematics scaled so well? (1 Viewer)

Economics is the top scaled social science subject! I'm so happy

I have to add that these are old results.

Last years' results indicate that the scaling on Physics is higher than Chemistry now

I think engineering and the sciences, especially Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics should be sacred.

Scientists, engineers and doctors should be considered sacred gods amongst society for they bring their plans and designs to fruition and real existence and maintained and gave us this better standard of living the arts and humanities people also take advantage of.

Scientists, engineers and doctors are the true gods.



Problems that the arts and humanities people consider impossible, the godly scientists and engineers are quite able to solve.

Could you open your mind just a little? There is no use in distinguishing science and humanities, to glorify in spite of the other is quite ridiculous. Both are necessary for society to function. How can we live in a society without an effective legal and parliamentary system? You mentioned a higher standard of living yet failed to mention the economists who help our government obtain sustained long-term prosperity in order to acquire just that.

'Without scientists and doctors we'd have no medicine, no infastructure, blah blah blah' you whimsily say... and yes, I couldn't agree more. But you could similarly apply this statement to the work of humanitarians to the consummerist world we have come to live in. The work of scientists is excellent but that doesn't mean the work of the economist, politican, historian, etc is any less.

We can't all be scientists. We can't all be humanitarians.
Society needs both!

I read the start of this then skipped everything because it got boring, but I did dip into the scaling report and if you look, humanities (apparently) aren't being as hard done by as people would suggest. Rank the top 10 subjects ascaled mean whatever) excluding languages, because that would be heck tedious. This according to 2008

1. Maths Extension 2 - 44.5 (Elite maths)
2. Maths Extension 1 - 40
3. English Extension 2 - 36.5 (Elite English)
4. English Extension 1 - 36.3
5. Music Extension - 34.2
6. History Extension - 33.9 o)
7. Music 2 - 32.3 (what?)
8. Chemistry - 31.6 - coming in pretty low for the pro science option
9. English Advanced - 31.3
10. Economics - 30.7

Physics isn't even top 10 (Well, it's number 11, so it's not as bad as it sounds)

So this whole thing should be put to rest, as although extension maths cleans up, English, extension history and Music clean up the sciences.

So I guess they don't really scale worse. Very suprising.

I believe they were the scaled mean of the cohort. I.e. the average of everyone's obviously. As you can see, Maths > English.

That doesn't do MX2 justice. Remember that MX2 is counted as TWO units (also making MX1 count as two), whereas EEX2, EEX1, HX, Music extension are only 1. Also, even the person sitting on the bottom 25% of MX2 gets scaled up. Ie. CRAZY scaling.

This is from the 2003 list I think. Now Physics has better scaling than Chemistry, but I have a feeling that this year and my cohort will push chem and physics a little higher up and chem might get a little better than physics... they are all VERY close.

And that's a good point about the unit values... I think we do all forget that!

In regards to MX2 scaling. It makes me puke. A 60 for a HSC mark is still in around 42/50 for scaled aggregate points. To give an idea of how dirty this scaling is... Chemistry and Advanced English need a HSC mark of 90 for about 42/50 for aggregate!

Ahh, well done! ^_^ Although Music 2 isn't really an extension... I don't want to brag and be arrogant but I will be for just a sentence; I'm quite talented in music and my school only offer Music 1 (obviously I wanted 2) so now I'm dropping Music ...

Exactly. Even if music 2 has excellent scaling, only less than a thousand people in the state have the ability/want to do it/their school offers it to them anyway.

I do agree society in the meantime needs both but politicians are leeches.
While the working class gets stuck in traffic or overcrowded public transport, covered in dust and work for a pitiful salary while the politicians waste tax payer on their little trips to Hawaii for "the benefit of the country".
The humanitarians tend to exaggerate their status which is why it is concerning.
I'm also talking about the worse case scenario when society and civilisation falls and then the people you mentioned become entirely useless.
