I'm not sure on the differences between UTS' computing science and UNSW's computer science.
USyd used to have a Computer Science course but they scrapped it and now direct interested people into doing B Adv. Computing (https://sydney.edu.au/courses/courses/uc/bachelor-of-advanced-computing.html)

In the early days of the formative period of the body of studies associated with the use of computers (in the early 1960s), much of the applications was in the area of computation (calculations). So many early courses included a course in Numerical Analysis - concerned with the numerical solution of differential equations, etc. In high school maths, you have the Trapezoidal Rule, Simpson's Method and Newton'S Method - all these are elementary examples of Numerical Analysis. Hence Computing Science.

In any new branch of study, a number of alternative terms are proposed by various pioneers in the field. As the field evolves, certain terms become more popular and become adopted. 50 years ago, you have ADP (Automatic Data Processing), then EDP (Electronic Data Processing) and eventually these terms lost their usage until now you have IT.

So is there any difference in computing science to computer science? or is it the same thing just called differently at different uni's?

Hi, the Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) is more than just a computer science degree - it's 4 years long with an embedded research/honours year. The structure is different too
* UNSW has 2 years of a major (CS, databases, ecommerce, AI, programming languages, computer networks, security engineering) + 1 year of minor/or electives.
* UTS has 2 years of core (including studio based classes), 1 year of major (software, math, stats, Op Research, Quantum computing, AI & Data Analytics, Information systems, cybersec and privacy, interaction design and networking), 0.5 year electives, 0.5 year of Honours thesis/research.

Both are roughly equivalent in math, C/S theory, the main difference is that UTS has the compulsory research stream. Oh, and studio based classes, which are using the UTS research strength in computer science
