There are two seperate debates going on in this thread (I just finished reading the whole fuckin thing) - whether the judgement was correct, and whether she was innocent.

From everything I've heard, the judgement was probably fairly lenient, as Corby's defense did very little to refute the prosecution's claims and establish reasonable doubt. If the defense had raised all the holes - the missing video evidence, the problems with the forensics etc. - then there would be genuine and strong cause to find her innocent, but basically all they relied on was circumstantial evidence - baggage handlers could've done it because they're being investigated now, it doesn't really make sense for her to do it etc. For that reason, I believe that she has a pretty good chance on appeal, if she gets a better defence team.

As to her guilt, well, no-one can really know for certain, as has been said. But it does seem suss that she'd go over to Bali several times, refuse to open her bag, take a bodyboard bag in the first place, and all that. And even worse is the fact that there's been no plausible explanation given to refute those claims.
And as for the argument that the pot would be worth more in Australia, apparently there's a big trade in westerners buying from westerners in Bali, because tourists are suspicious of locals selling when there's such large penalties.

Great summary post

blunty i think she guilty, but everyone is in the hype to realize that she was laughing it off at the beginning before she realized the extent of the crimes.

wtf? unconditional?! so if they murdered someone they'd still be unconditionally pardoned? OK so he was probably talking about drug smuggling - but if they were guilty why should they be pardoned? what kind of twisted...logic is this...

Can anyone explain to me what their take is on the evidence that baggage handlers smuggled cocain into sydney on the same day as hers?
The AFP say it's different, and it was inadmissable as they'd already closed the case when it came about... but could someone explain why this evidence isn't the main thrust of her appeal, obviously there's something wrong with it?

Isn't that just circumstantial evidence (as in, it doesn't prove anything)? Just because there was a shipment of drugs being brought into the airport on the same day, doens't mean that those drugs/other drugs were planted on Corby. I'm sure Asqy/other laws students would be able to explain it better.

AFAIK, the appeal will have to be on the grounds of the lack of forensic evidence. Basically, it'll be the defence team arguing that there was enough evidence missing to create doubt. I think. Again, Asqy would probably be better able to explain how the appeal will work.

^ Is it a virus or something? Oh, and don't forget to share with us some 'interesting arguments' they make over there.

Anyway, going back to the topic, why is Corby guilty? This is my post from the other Corby topic, but now that I think about it, putting it here is actually more appropriate.

Don't forget that she DOES have a STRONG motive to commit the crime: her dying father.

I've watched somewhere that the family can't afford the necessary medical treatment. And Corby really loves her father; she picks him up from far away simply because she's worried about him.

This motive explains a few things:
1. why she'd be stupid enough to smuggle drugs to Bali

2. Why she's been showing so much emotion - not only will she get in gaol for what she thinks is a good cause, but her hope of her father's recovery is shattered

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I think it was channel 9's Sunday that reported her father's deteriorating health. To me, when it tried to draw pity from the public, the program actually gave away a very strong motive for Corby's crime (if she did commit it).

Note that this is NOT a concrete evidence, and I'm not saying she is definitely guilt. It's just a possible motive.
