Why is it necessary to exclude air from catalytic and thermal cracking?

All the textbooks I have read say that thermal and catalytic cracking are carried out in the absence of air. But none of them bother to explain why!

Can someone pls tell me why it is necessary to remove air

The reason why air would be excluded from catalytic and thermal cracking is because cracking takes place at high temps + pressures (without oxygen). If you had oxygen in the reactor, it would react with the reaction taking place in the vessel and will produce by-products. Furthermore, if oxygen was to be abundant in the reaction vessel, there would be an explosion.
