I recieved a GLEP offer for comm/law at MAQ
Been doing some 'research' (so procrastinating on BOS)
There are comments like jobs being non-existent for MAQ students, students wanting to transfer from MAQ to UNSW or USYD (especially for comm/law i've noticed)
It's treated like the senior science of unis i swear
May i ask why?
I mean i get that it's cutoff is lower and it gives out a lot of early offers but is something i should be really worried about?
The teaching, social environment, employ ability, support services, food .etc

To be honest uni doesn't matter if you're a good candidate you'll get a job. That said, I've found MQ quite nice - I've met good people and friends ans everyone's supportive. I think there's a lot of societies to join with many events, the teaching has been fine so far, and there's many support services and opportunities including PACE (work experience kinda) and first step mentoring.

Macquarie's pretty good with food access as its close to Macquarie shops. Most (of thehe tutors/lecturers that I have come across) are really supportive and I feel like that has differed from some of my friends at other universities. The station is closing for about 9 months so that is another factor you'll need to consider getting to Uni if you choose to go to Macquarie.

*anecdotal evidence* I've been to lots of assessment centres, interviews etc and they have never really cared that I go to macquarie instead of say unsw. However, you will find that lots of people interviewing with me at said places are from unsw/usyd. This is mostly because these people are really competitive and apply to lots of things and are otherwise well-rounded individuals. You can be a good fit for a job/be a well-rounded individual at any uni.

I feel like a lot of Macquarie students don't think to apply or realise that they should/can apply for assessment centres for vacationer positions etc.

Yea i'm one of the only ones of my mates who is actively trying and applying to heaps of things sigh. Because it takes less effort during hsc to get into Macquarie Commerce, the cohort is generally a lot lazier I have found.

About 10-15% of the big 4 im at atm is MQ/UTS
And that is at a big 4.

Summary: Uni doesn't matter*
*excludes elite jobs

The general principle is that no matter what university you go to, you can basically still go anywhere in commerce IF and only IF you ars a good candidate. That said, anyone logical will want to maximise their chances of landing whatever their dream role is. For 95%of commerce jobs it literally DOES NOT MATTER which of usyd unsw uts mq you go to. It's the same.

Where does it matter? It matters for only the elite graduate jobs (investment banking or top tier consulting) that most people aren't aware of anyway until it's too late (i.e. didn't have a family friend or connection they saw in the same role to then aspire for the ssme thing). For these elite jobs, going to MQ, on average, is definitely a disadvantage. Your 80 WAM at macquarie comm/law will likely look 'less' vs a 80 WAM from usyd comm/law (all else equal) which is probably fair its much harder to get that mark at usyd law (objective evidence from people who studied in both unis). If you are around the top of your cohort e.g. university medal that's a completely different story (i.e. you are literally anything but average.

This is just the reality.

Also anotheer very important aspect is your cohort. the people you meet at usyd or unsw who are around the top of their cohort are usually exceptionally ambitious. You have no option to just follow it and it will motivate most people to perform well especially given most 17-18 year olds literally just don't know enough to be intrinsically motivated e.g. the number of people I meet saying "I wish i knew about X in first year would have worked so much harder..." You will.. if you go to those universities and meet those people (sometimes can get a little toxic tho)

MQ seems to give out tons of bonus points which lowers its "prestige" in some eyes

When you graduate, it's the same degree as someone from USYD or UNSW so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter

I wouldn’t say ‘same’ technically the value of it depends on your universities prestige. If two students straight out of uni applied for the same job and everything else about them was equally good but one was from Usyd and the other from Wsu then most likely the Usyd one would be chosen. My dad also runs a business and has heaps of clients that run pretty big companies and some of them don’t pay as much attention to a job application from a really low ranked uni when there’s people from Usyd, Unsw etc(if you’re straight out of university).

That being said obviously the more experience you get the less people care about your university name

macq sold its reputation for $$ by lowering its standards for international students to near nothing
I mean idk about that but it's a bit too easy to get into and unfortunately that means it lessens the quality of the cohort. At my school everyone who applied to Macq for early entry was offered it and soo many of them made up stuff as well, and these were people who would not care about their education or others, sitting around and disturbing classes all day.

Yep no joke at all. A lot of the time it was exaggerating things to the point that they're untrue. For example someone I know did community service for a day or something but wrote it out to say it was for much longer and also added in extra roles that they never did. Now they can't exactly verify if you really did the roles or not because all my friend presented to them was the certificate. He got in btw.

Like dammit when I tried to apply for it I gave up because I can't really spit out much and here you are telling me that your classmates got in by lying
