Wtf iBibah...

Each increment has ~50 people. 99.95/0.05 = 1999 possible ranks. So 1999*50 =99950 people. obvs not since many dropped out - there are about 60k?? 70k??? (someone find the facts)

Remember ATAR shows your position in relation to the year 7 cohort, not just those who finished year 12.

Don't understand that.

I thought yr7 cohort = yr12 cohort + those who dropped out..

but since they dropped out, then they won't be sitting for the exams, and therefore they shouldn't be included in the percentiles anymore

The students that dropped out are counted from the bottom. If 10% of the cohort dropped out and 90% do HSC then if you sit the HSC, you can't get in the bottom 10%.

That's it, your ATAR is a percentilele rank demonstrating what percentage of the state you beat. Every 0.05 interval represents 40ish students, only the top 40ish students each year can score an ATAR of 99.95. Its therefore technically impossible to score an ATAR of 100 because technically you can't beat 100% of the students competing in the HSC when including yourself ( i.e. you can't beat yourself).
