Why should you try in HSC to get the best mark, when in essence, you will be receiving the mark that is in accordance to your rankings. (So, if you're ranked 2nd in English, you would get the 2nd highest mark)

Don't worry, I'm obviously going to try, but I was just thinking today, what's the point, when your mark isn't essentially your mark. Do you get me?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Yes your assessment mark is determined by your rank etc. but you still keep your OWN exam mark. That is 50% of the HSC mark- whatever you get in the HSC, will stay as your exam mark and count for 50%, regardless of your rank.

if you get 0 in the HSC exam that is 50% of your marks which you have lost. whatever you get in the hsc exam counts for a huge amount (50%). that is more than enough reason to try. i wonder how many people actually think what OP does o.e

does that mean someone with a lower rank can get a higher overall mark? provided that they beat them in externals

1st place: Internal 90 - External 90
2nd place: Internal 89 - External 95

Moderated:
1st place: Internal 95 - External 90 - 92.5 -> 93
2nd place: Internal 90 - External 95 - 92.5 -> 93

I don't think so to be honest, I think that they can only be tied? Not too sure on that one.

You still have to try hard and work well to get a good mark so you rank well,

You'd be surprised how poorly understood the system is by the vast majority of students.
It seems that Teachers never explain it well enough to students when they start year 12, as a result you get bits and pieces of how the system functions through out the year, and some students are still left not knowing come HSC exam time. Schools everywhere should have a HSC guidance class once a fortnight, dedicated purely to HSC related matters, well that's what I think at least.

Once a fortnight? That's overkill and waste of time.

this is a little bit random
but generally is your rank more important or ur mark??
people are telling me ur rank is more important

but lets say u were first in physics
but that mark is only 79? or 80?

would it be better to be 4th in class, and get a score of 90??

im getting really confused, ive always thought the rank was important, but without a good mark how can ur rank really get u anywhere? :S
and also like when u type stuff in the atar calc it only asks for ur marks, regardless of ranks
and they give u a pretty accurate estimate (within + or - 4 atar points)

HSC is a really dodgy system and weighing 50% for internals is just stupid (imo). I can probably say that 90% of schools have really dodgy exams and assessments and the only fair and decent exam is the actual HSC exam.

To answer some question...
1. If you get 0 externally, you won't be counted in the course (it will be like you didn't do the course).
2. It is always possible to "overtake" someone by the final HSC mark.
3. The actual mark itself has nothing to do with the moderating process, only the gaps between other students in your cohort matter. Also, your rank is probably more important.

Please explain :)

From my understanding ranks inherently aren't worth anything.
