heh, those are shocking stories collin. yeah, i realise the fact that most people just make shit up about computers, its a shame.
even though i know a fuckload, i've never had a customer that could take me on, even the IT business professionals, to be honest, the average consumer doesnt know enough to tell whether im bullshitting or not.
ah well, ill try and sell plasma's more often.
how much comission do you get?
That's precisely the point which gets to me. That is, the sales people understand the fact that most consumers won't have a clue if you bullshit to them, so many do just that (either because they know that or because they actually don't know what they're talking about). Hence, I try to distance myself from using the 'I sell these' lines since it's not a position I'm overly proud of.
You work at JB-Hifi Warringah Mall right? I wouldn't mind a sales job somewhere like that. The mall is essentially a major shopping hub for the
residential areas of the Northern Beaches, whereas my North Sydney position attracts mostly professionals (since it's smack bang in the middle of a CBD). Where I work, it's pretty difficult to bullshit anything, unless your target customer was a 40 year old housewife, or something. Add-on sales like extended warranties are more difficult to sell too.
But I think it's time I start looking for more specialised work soon. My sales department consists of anything that's defined as a 'business machine', but my main interests are PC hardware and cameras. So talking to customers about laptops and such are fine and dandy, but I've also gotta constantly update my knowledge on items such as labelling machines. As for the commission Q, I don't get commission. I would need to transfer to a store with a Techworks department to be eligible for commission. One such example is the Dee Why Supastore, but there are so many dodgy cunts who work there.
But to be honest I was so enthusiast about sales when I first got into it.. but now it's just another ordinary job. I know alot about the areas I specialise in, and because there's budget quotas, I'm essentially forced to bullshit to sell things. That's just not something I like doing.
"Wow the new 10 megapixel IXUS! I wanna get a camera for my son's big game on the weekend - this is good right?"
I feel inclined to respond.. "Yeah, except for the Q of whether or not these pussy-sized P&S sensors can actually handle 10MP resolutions well and that the manual setting doesn't actually boast any real options for playing around with the shutter speed or aperture.. which would just be
great for action shots."
But usually end up more with a grudging "Yeah, they're great cameras.", which would of course promote a sale.
I need to find myself a consultant position.
