A shift is a period of time in a day that you're required to work.

There are no set hours in a shift.
I could have a 3hr shift.. or a 12hr shift..

Get it?

Oh btw I just learnt something new about the meaning of "shift".

At my friend's workplace, a shift is set to 3hrs.
So... she can work 3 shifts in a day - in another words we'd just call it a 9hr shift.. if that makes sense.

Wow, that's weird.. :S

Does that mean if she works 6 hours (i.e. 2 shifts) she has to like.. sign off and sign back on again at 3 hours?

By the way... do you mind if I ask where your friend works?

Some telemarketing thing..

She signs in when she starts working and signs out when she leaves.

The rules are like you work a shift [3hrs] you get a half hr break then work another shift.. so you're there with a total of 6.5hrs.. and i think there's a 15min break within the 3hr shift too..
