Hi everyone, I aspire to be an Investment banker after graduation. Currently im studying Commerce at ANU but would like to transfer to Melbourne to study commerce (finance) in either UMelb or Monash next year.

I found this degree offered by Monash which appears to be perfect for me, Bachelor of Banking and Finance, however I found out the Vtac guide from 2006 listed the ENTER/UAC requirement to be only 82.10, which is quite low and my instinct is to back away from it because of the common social (mis)perception that low requirements means crappier degree. I understand it's all about demand and supply however this still bothers me a bit.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge as to if studying this degree, which is perfectly relevant and I believe quite useful, however not deemed as prestigious, would have a negative effect on my chances of landing an Investment banking job, compared to someone who graduated from Commerce at Melbourne Uni?

This is the degree I'm talking about

For IB, yes...

for 95% of other jobs... probably not..

(don't know anything about victorian uni's though...)

IF IB recruits on the same line as Hedge funds, then it might not make much difference depending on the role you apply for and the organisation you apply for.

Well lots of Hedge funds recruit (steal) people from IBs.

IMO, the university wont matter (much). Things always matter, but in the context of things, go for it.

You can always do an Msc at a top uni later. Monash is fine. And btw, I strongly doubt the recruiters will even know what the cut off for that course is...

Go for it man. This degree is about banking and finance, you need to remember, unlike other degrees.

I have friends who work for hedge funds that never went to university.

Yeah I'd go to Melbourne by transfer if I could.

Hmmm in that case, what about a Finance & Banking/Law Degree at Monash?

my comment was in response to someone who said the hr lady might not know about your degree details/cutoff etc.....they do.

i dont know about the quality of monash but as you say if there is a common perception that its lower on the scale of things then it might reduce your chances at ib since they hire so little in aust. also some banks rule out people with single degrees so combining with law or anything else will help

With the amount of people gaining university degrees these days, the old rhetoric of working your way up doesnt work these days. Sad but true.

Really newb? The HR at my work are pretty clueless although its not in banking or finance.

I know that an arab guy from monash got into macquarie ibd with a single Bcom (HD average, just).

So yes you can get in from monash but u gotta work hard or have contacts.

On another note, did anyone read the last brw rich issue where one guy who finished a construction management degree, and went straight into STARTING a hedge fund, and got babcock and brown as a client? He knew a guy in B&B, but that is pretty damn impressive.

Dyun: Seriously finish your degree at ANU, do honours, get a 2.1 or first, and do a top MSc at a good uni. Just save up the $50k you are going to pay in course fees. You will get that back when you earn $100k first year out.

Hi Velox, I would love to finish my degree at ANU however I am from Melbourne and my parents recently spilt up, so I need to be there for my mother and sister when they need me- considering my mother is not a native english speaker, those times when they need me are many lol :(. Right now I'm actually thinking of finishing my degree in Australia (preferably Melbourne Uni commerce) then go into Investment Banking at Hong Kong or America in the future.

Does anyone know of any success stories with Australian Uni graduates landing IB jobs in Wall Street?

Then go to melbourne. Family comes first.

Forget ib in america, they have a billion top unis there. Easiest way is to get a transfer or apply after 3+ years.

America is in trouble with its economy, better to stay here.
