For example, would the people doing 12 units have an advantage over those doing 10, even if only 10 units are counted, since they see you're doing extra?

I personally think no

If you have 12 units, you have a backup just in case you bomb out in one subject although 10 units means you can spend more time on other subjects.

It really depends on how you perform, if you do 12 units, study smart/hard and get a good mark then continue having 12 units

If (out of 12 units) there's a particular subject you hate and/or not performing well in drop it ASAP

There's no advantage. As jaxx said, 12 units is so that if you bomb out you have a backup, or you just really love all your subjects and want another one.

10 units gives you more time to study (which is why I'm doing 11 but did 1 last year)

There's no guaranteed benefit from doing more units as in the end only your best 10 units with 2 units of English are used to calculate your atar.

Doing 12 units might mean you perform lower overall because you wouldn't be spending the same amount of time studying each subject as a person with 10 units could.

However, in saying that if you are consistently performing well in all the subjects it might be an advantage since in the hsc if you screw up one external exam on the day it wont negatively affect your atar.

Overall it is better to do 10 or 11 units units, and if there is a clear subject that you are underperforming in than the others while doing 12 units you might as well drop it since it won't count and will use up time you could use to study th other subjects.
