Obviously @Hivaclibtibcharkwa is the Biology expert here, but generally speaking, HSC courses build on the knowledge acquired throughout Preliminary courses, meaning that while your focus will undoubtedly be on HSC Biology content, you should not forget the main concepts taught in Preliminary Biology, as Hivaclibtibcharkwa mentioned. This is very similar to other subjects where remembering and utilising Preliminary concepts/content can be useful and effective in year 12. In addition to HSC Biology, this applies to other subjects, such as:
  • HSC English --> by having a thorough knowledge and understanding of a range of techniques that can be used to complement analysis and essay writing in year 12.
  • HSC Mathematics --> Some Preliminary concepts may be assessable in year 12 depending on the level of Mathematics the student takes, meaning it is important and favourable to remain familiar with Preliminary content to a decent extent.
  • HSC Business Studies --> The more basic concepts are incorporated within the Preliminary course and the foundation provided in year 11 may constitute an important element going into year 12, where the HSC course explores more specific concepts, and where being familiar with Preliminary content may be beneficial for more effective manipulation of HSC content. A good example of this is leadership style, which is explored within the "Business management" Preliminary topic, and is revisited as part of the "Human resources" HSC topic.
I hope this helps! :D

No prelim bio content is explicitly tested in the HSC. However, HSC bio content is far more nuanced and complex than prelim, so if you're struggling now, it would be good to find out why and try to fix that for next year.
