Actually, it existed back to the 70's or earlier. It doesn't really matter. It may have been tenous when Thatcher popularised it, but the whole scientific reality today owe's nothing to the 70's or Political manipulation.

The political and business reality today would support the denial of anthropogenic global warming. Exactly as Howard was doing. Science, and political/business interests are tense on this issue.
A political conspiracy to promote global warming is irrational.

Read "The Weather Makers" by Tim Flannery. All round great bloke. I won't bother posting more, because nothing could be as elegant and engaging as this book. It should at least sow concern in anyones mind.
Not really. Why do you say that? Its great political campaigning to jump on the environmental bandwagon and propose all these grand plans to reduce co2 emissions. As for "The Weather Makers"- thanks, will read.

Because political parties recieve funding from business interests. Politicians are as much constrained by business (or unions) as they are by voters.

Business wants moderate and sustainable environmental policies. Many leading climate scientists fervently believe in the need for radical anti-industry measures, such as shutting down of the entirety of Australia's coal power network.

Business and the economy are the major concerns of any government (not forgetting most voters). The idea that globally governments would support and encourage an environmental intiative, that at it's logical extreme threatens modern capitalism is ludicrous.

Its actually pseudo-science, and predominantly political.

You lose.
It's not pseudo-science. This is where your you distinct lack of scientific knowledge comes in.

Every day I see a new scientific paper finding evidence for an environmentally problematic global warming trend. What's unique is that many paper find this evidence from an unrelated niche area of biology/meteorology/oceanography/etc; something that would be rather hard to accomplish it the theory weren't true.

Please, provide proof. And don't link me to secret conspiracy theory websites claiming it's all a ploy by the Oil barons who secretly have puppets in the American government. ;)

You're right in saying this is politically motivated, and I would certainly say I am not happy with that (although it has certainly done a great deal for raising public awareness of the environment as a whole). But the fact remains the science is also very sound, and the trend is a significant problem. If you've any brains you'll attack the politics behind it and suggest better ways it could be approached, rather than trying to convince yourself the problem doesn't exist and it's all conspiracy theories.

As hard as it is for me to say this, I see your point.

I agree- and that's what I'm attacking, the politics behind it that I feel may be tainting the 'scientific evidence' and leading me to believe that its more a political stunt then a scientific theory. So basically, all I want is evidence that isn't of the sensationalised, Al Gore variety, so I can trust the science behind the theory- rather than just taking Al Gore's word for it.

I'll try and find some science journalist articles on recent papers on the issue (but if you want the paper itself, without journalistic bias, you'd have to try and find it through google's paper search or buy the issue of the journal it came from).

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=...=+site:www.physorg.com+physorg+global+warming

PhysOrg is my favourite science news website. On the whole, they won't refrain from bringing up articles on either side of an issue or debated theory, and their articles are usually very informative to read. I mainly use it to keep up with findings in evolution and psychology/neuroscience.

The infectious disease / vector issue is probably a more significant issue for developing world nations. The last thing they need is an increased prevelance of vector bourne diseases...
