Am I like really really special or did everyone get an invite to become a member from the Golden Key International Honour Society? It sounds really wanky but it came from the university with letter head and everything. *I feel special* :)

People I hate #563: People who use 'Pass', 'Credit' and 'Distinction' to refer to marks for individual assignments.
IMO warranted if the final exam is worth fk all (or if there is no final exam) and the in-semester assessments were weighted pretty heavily. Unfortunately (depending on what cup of tea you prefer), engineering and IT subjects usually have at least a 50% weighting for the exam, so i only really hear that kinda stuff from my arts friends.

I fucking hate IT and engo assignments sometimes because of that though. You pour heaps of effort into a 5 week project and it only ends up being like 4% of the total mark (*cough* embedded computing *cough*).

Nah. I suspect that if I did fork out the $90 to join, I wouldn't end up engaging with the club at all and it would just be a waste of money.

Yeah I can't really see myself attending any of their exclusive mensa meetings or whatever.

I was mainly wondering if the career opportunities etc would be worthwhile.

Perhaps not.

In conclusion, I don't know.

Hey Silver Persian. Random question but do you know much about Class and Status in Sociology?.... You probs should since you are a Sociology God.... What theory do you prefer Weber or Marx/Engels? I have an online tutorial on the subject, you got anything interesting/enlightening I can ponder?

Please tell me embedded computing's not compulsory for SEng. (Just checked, it's not, score).

Question: Have you done your vac work yet? If so, where, and when do applications generally open?

done and still doing it down at RailCorp. Probably the only place that'd accept anyone earlier than 3rd year with a credit average. Plus they offer flexible working hours (full time during holidays, 1-2 days a week during semester). Apps usually open around july till about september for all summer vac companies.

FYI:
Engineering and IT Summer Vacation 2009-2010 and Graduate Employment 2009 - Home - The University of Sydney
Engineering Sydney&#8482Engineering and IT Careers Fair - Home - The University of Sydney

Quite a few of my mates went with accenture for half a year (they do software and computer eng), pretty good experience and pay but you have to work 6 months straight (so they did part time uni).

I've applied to Railcorp already. Kinda fucked for Accenture for an internship (as amazing as that would be) because my average is probably a credit, if that, though this semester's looking like the one where I turn it around and get straight 80s.

EDIT: What's the pay like at Railcorp, if you don't mind me asking?
