Ship A is sailing due north at 24 km/h and ship B is sailing due west at 16 km/h. At 2 pm, B is 104 km due east of A. When will they be nearest and by how near?

I know how to answer that, (through a x & y graph ) but can't get the equations

[x-1]= -5

Breaks into 2 equations

x-1=-5
x=-4

and

x-1=-[-5]
x-1=5
x=6

Therefore x= 6 and -4

There is a solution :(
On Mars there would be. But here on earth,

It is not possible for that sole absolute value in that bracket to be negative.

Whatever is in the absolute brackets is always a positive. It cannot be a negative unless another operation occurs. Hence there are no solutions.

It is way to early for maths, i have been waking up at ~11am everyday in the holidays and i am trying to get my sleeping back in whack.

Yes, my bad, there is no answer

If it wasn't negetive

[x-1]= 5

x-1=5
x=6

and

x-1=-5
x=-4

Therefore [x-1]= 5, x is -4 and 6

It's never too early for the art of mathematics.

Hopefully I wont make such a noob mistake in an exam. Also! I've learnt Permutations and Combinations. So now i'll try to discover your name :)

I just saved you a potential 1 marker for question 1 in your HSC.
