Re: The Official Cricket Thread

Well, the next test is a week away and I think there's talk about using a four-pronged pace attack (but then again when do we not have rumours like that especially here in Australia where we don't actually have a recognised #1 spinner who is very very good)

Re: The Official Cricket Thread

I wonder if Nathan Lyon will be kept for the WACA test then.
he will be the 12th man. ryan harris will go in. in the ashes last summer he and johnson won australia the match at the WACA.

and tendulkar wont get his 100th 100 at the WACA. he has a big chance in adelaide though

Interesting I wonder when the last time Australia played four seamers at home was. My guess in in 2009, against India, after leading 2 nil in the series I think they added Shaun Tait to the test side. India won the test comfortably.

Yeah tbh I dont really see the need for the four seamers either, the bowling attack is going wonderfully well at the moment with Siddle, Hilfenhaus and Pattinson. People might argue that Lyon will be ineffective at the WACA but hes hasnt been threatening in the last two test matches only dismissing 2 tail enders so you might as well leave him in the team he might take a few top order wickets if things go his way.

wrong. have a look here: http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2010-11/engine/match/428751.html

ashes 3rd test last year. they played 4 seamers and it was a success especially with harris playing well.

im not suggesting this for adelaide test as well. im saying they should do this at the WACA, especially if the pitch is indicative of the past.

I guess if they do have the four paceman and drop Lyon for the test then Clarke or Warner can throw in some spin.
well they are going to assess the pitch on the first day and then decide on whether they go all pace or keep lyon in. but if its anything like last years pitch they will play the 4 fast bowlers.

Yeah ok that's one against me but if you look at how the match panned out the fourth seamer then (Siddle) prove pretty well pointless, You will observe at Perth both last year and in 2008 that the spin bowler for the touring side took more wickets than the 4th seam bowler for Australia. http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2010-11/engine/match/428751.html .

i see what you are saying. if australia had a spinner like graeme swann or anil kumble i would definitely support playing a spinner. but nathan lyon imo does not have enough variation to trouble the indian batsmen. the only time the indians have looked comfortable is against him. we'll just have to see what the australians end up doing i suppose.

Believe me I'm not a fan of Lyon, but I've never seen a game where four seam bowlers played significant roles. The few times I've seen it happen the first three seize the initiative early and the fourth is made redundant, or the batsman get on top and to give bowlers rests and to speed up over rates part timers have to come on and bowl a lot of overs. Now it may well be that Clarke is virtually on par with Lyon at the moment and if the plan is for Clarke to begin taking on a role as a fairly regular bowler that's fine and a new strategy can be drawn around that omitting a specialist spinner but to go in with the intention that the side will not bowl spin at all in the innings is fraught with problems.

Interestingly listening to Harsha Bhogle on the radio earlier in the series he was amazed Krejza is not still in the side, from what little he saw of him in India a while back he thought he was far and away the only spin bowler he'd seen from Australia since Macgill retired with much in the way of wicket taking ability, and I have to say I agree(although O'keefe seems to be made of the right stuff).

Re: The Official Cricket Thread

yeah fairly certain harris, siddle and hilfenhaus will get the bulk of the wickets so like you said the 4th bowler will be redundant. so it doesnt really matter who they end up playing.
