Not too long ago, we had an exam (for a science subject i won't name), and it was purely based on about 1-4 syllabus dot points, that cover the same basic topic. The exam altogether was out of 45 (25 marks dedicated to a model, 20 dedicated to 5 questions).

The problem here is that this exam was worth 25%, our half yearly exam was 20% and our trial is worth 30%.

I'm not complaining because i didn't do well, which isn't the case, but rather everyone's ranks seem really messed up, and students who have hardly studied all year, could manage to pull off 95-100.

A similar case occurred in another science in which a 25% exam covered about 3-4 first hand practical tasks, with the half yearly exam worth 20% and trials worth 30%.

Is this fair?
:/

I had a Physics assessment.

Was worth 30% (Trials is worth 35%).

And it was out of 30 marks. (i.e. 1 mark = 1%)

Made like 2 sillies already...

So yeah.

Wait til you get to uni, 50-70% weighted exams are normal.

yes it's fair because everyone sits the same exams/assessments. it's not the most balanced thing in the world in terms of syllabus coverage:weighting but that's not always a problem.
i think i had something similar in english last year where my separate exams for modules were worth like 15% whilst in the trial worth only about 5-7% - meaning that screwed me over since i didn't do well in the small assessment tasks but bossed it towards the end of the year in trials.
wait for the trials before you really look at ranks - they'll generally put people closer to where they should be (those who got lucky with knowing those 4 dot points may not be as lucky when they're tested on the entire syllabus)

yep our science faculty is pretty dysfunctional... apparently we're gonna have to have 40 people in one class next term cos a teacher is leaving -.-

I personally don't think it's fair because some kids can just magically fluke a test and have that impact really positively on their rank or vice versa.
They do it at my school too :'(

there's nothing wrong with "magically fluking" a test. the school sets the test for a reason. some exams like the trials will favour those who study hard, while others might favour people who have certain ways of thinking or have an aptitude towards science.

In my opinion, the ideal weighting should be 15%, 30%, 15%, 40%.

Where the 15%s are small assessment tasks, the 30% is half-yearly and 40% is the trial.

LOL idk bout your year but this year's Penrith research is worth 30% while prac is worth 30%, that'll probs screw over a lot of good Phy/Chem/Bio(?) students...

it's totally up to your teachers for the weighting. As long as the weighting was stated on the assessment notif and it corresponds, they can do whatever they want.
