That's like saying the US army is a christian army because most of the members are christians. The army is secular in terms (at least at the general level) they want to keep egypt as secular as possible. Why do you think they overthrew the muslim brotherhood? Why do you think theres so much tension between the hard right islamists and everyone else in egypt?

Who cares if they are behind the rest of the world ?? The world would be boring and mundane if all there wasn't a diverse culture. Besides, that's what makes the Middle East unique!

There are videos of the "protesters" shooting AKs at the police then hiding behind bystanders, videos of the aftermath of the "protesters" raids on police stations where they killed all the popos and also videos of them throwing rocks/chasing police vehicles off bridges etc. Both parties are guilty, but it makes it hard for the military when the extremists hide in the crowds with weapons. This would be a complex situation, we can't really make any informed opinions on it.

The irony is that, America is finding this military massacre! They evidently also have a role in this conflict...

So true, and as we speak arrangements are being made to increase aid from the US to Israel, yay for more destruction in the middle east. The world we live is fucked, all of it for private assets.

It's in the US and Israel's interest to keep egypt secular, they don't really want to spark off a whole new conflict... Egypt has a VERY VERY modern military and is better than our own in a lot of ways. Also the Suez Canal is EXTREMELY important for international trade and what not.

frostbitten is right, there's wrongs at both sides. It's the same with the situation in libya, the rebels aren't exactly the nicest people around in the first place. Hopefully this shit can resolve soon in egypt, anymore instability in the middle east makes it even more of a safe haven for hardcore islamists.

Whenever there is conflict in the middle east the rebelling side generally always has foreign extremist groups involved, for example Al'Qaeda in Syria and now apparently they are getting involved in Egypt.

The term islamists designate the spread of shariah law or guidance of the social order through religion and blocking anything that is non-muslim. Just look at Saudi arabia and their censorship towards the west. The only reason why we deal with them is a. they have a lot of oil 2. they are a monarchy. Monarchs seem to get along quite well with the british crown. then again it was the british crown who put them in power in the first place.

The Muslims brotherhood is a very very religiously based organisation and they want to rid egypt of any western influence. Just look at the drop in tourism after they came in power... They essentially installed shariah law in major cities and banned alcohol, killing the tourism industry.

Frostbitten: It's not just the middle east, same thing happened in the Philippines, malayasia and indonesia. The only thing in common with local insurgents and global jihadists is the fact theyre muslim, and thats the only thing that brings them together.

Have you lived in Saudi Arabia, i have and they do not 'cencor' the west its a normal country. Australia and the UK have little influence in Saudi Arabia, its all America there.

What? Do you even know what the protests are about? The EGYPTIAN PEOPLE, its citizens, want the Muslim Brotherhood. They want that.

Dont you think that the people have a right to choose what they want? More than 90% of Egypt is Muslim. What's the problem of installing an Islamic party. No, Egypt doesnt want to get rid of any western influence, Egypt wants the US and Israel to leave town.

Are you saying its bad to be Muslim, Period? or is it Islam bad for the west?

Egypt has a very advanced army please understand that, its not in Israel's and Americas best interest to lose control of the middle east. Libya got rid of there president and syria is about to, all they need now is leadership, and Egypt will be that leadership.

The Egyptian Army wants to keep Egypt secular. The legitimate president of Egypt Mohammed Morsi was over thrown in a coup by the military, supported by the US. You can understand that the people didnt like that.

A country has the right to pick who leads it and under what laws.

P.S Frostbitten, can you link me to the videos of the "protesters wielding AKs and then hiding behind bystanders"?

Yeah I'm sure saudi arabias police of vice and virtue is just a made up fact and the government doesn't attempt to censor media programs at all.

Of course egypt has a very advanced army, guess who sold them the weapons? They've done very well during the cold war playing both america and soviets to sell them advanced weapons systems, and america has been selling tons of high tech weapons.

Not all egyptians want the muslim brotherhood, there are SOME egyptians who want them. The first wave of protest post-2011 was AGAINST the Morsi regime. Morsi was overthrown by the army backed by popular support. Now the new wave of protests are pro-Morsi and they want to put him back. And yes Muslim brotherhood is hardcore islamist, they are restricting women's rights, pushing out anyone who isn't a muslim in the government. It's a huge step backwards towards making secular progress whether you like it or not.

Not to mention that Morsi's decision to make all declarations, laws and decrees for that period of time he came into power completely immune to appeal would have undoubtedly scared some people.
