Choosing between MGMT1001 and FINS1613 for Semester One of Year One of an actuarial degree has been a topic extensively debated in other threads on BOS. I personally did MGMT1001 in Semester One, and I believe it was the right decision. Hence, I recommend first years to do MGMT1001 in Sem One, but at the end of the day, it's not that major which one you end up doing in Sem One.

I am also going to be studying actuarial/comm and for sem 1 I picked MATH1151, FINS1613, ECON1101 and INFS1602. Are these good choices, I really have no idea?

Also, I made my timetable and it has 4 tutes on one day and a friend told me not to cram tutes too close together cos there are exams in them. Is this true cos if it is I should probably change it a bit

I recommend doing ACCT1501 instead of INFS1602.

Dead meat if all your tutorial tests and assignments happen on the same week, unless you enjoy having 4 exams/tests in one day.

I'm currently waiting for a scientia scholarship offer before I accept my offer (I'm interstate), but how do you guys, with an inside perspective, think actuarial studies is complemented by commerce compared to the advanced maths dual degree options?

It really comes down to interest tbh, in my eyes. If you have the interest and hence wish to get more exposure to commerce areas such as Accounting and Finance, then combining with Commerce is the way to go. Similarly, if you wish to learn more about higher mathematics and statistics, then combining with Advanced Maths looks good.

Unless you're really really passionate about higher/tertiary mathematics and statistics, I would personally recommend combining with commerce tho.

Thanks for that. I'll keep thinking.

Out of curiosity, what's your course and would you have changed anything in hindsight?

For me, I do both of them in third year according to my plan for a combined degree with adv maths. So I can't comment much

I study Actl Studies / Commerce myself. And, looking back at my first year of study in hindsight, there's nothing really I would have changed tbh.

Well that's a very unusual idea.

Personally, I wouldn't do FINS1612 in first semester at all, because if you don't end up doing a finance major, completing 1612 is a complete waste. Do FINS1613 first to get a taste of what university finance is like and, thus, to make sure you want to do a finance major.

As for delaying ECON1101, I don't see any major disadvantages, except for the fact that its delays when you can complete ECON1102, which has ECON1101 has a prerequisite.

also once ur done econ1102 thats all u need really so u can delay it later, just get hard stuff like mgmt done early with easy stuff like math1151 and secure achievable HDs
