Is this how the hsc works, using the scenario below:

Jerry is ranked last internally in maths extension 1 out of 70 students. And let’s say in the actual HSC extension 1 exam, the lowest mark is 20%. Although Jerry through regular practical papers achieves a mark of 90% in the HSC. Therefore his raw averaged mark is now 55% which scales to an E3, 80/100. Is this true because this mark is very good for someone who ranked last in internals.

nah not quite. firstly this explanation is usually a simplication of the statistics which probably involves a distribution of some sort. also ur scaling is the aligning process done by nesa to get ur hsc marks. raw marks are instead scaled by uac in calculating your atar.

anyways, iirc, it should be ((20+x)+(90+y))/2, rather than (20+90)/2 *z. so assuming 20 -> 50, 90 -> 97 we get ~73.5.
