thats legit sunken cost fallacy. Why on earth (pun intended) would u go through allat and not pick it in the end?
don't make decisions on it. but its a good point mf

This is the thing, in Earth (what I need to switch from) I am getting relatively good marks 90%+ and am finding it relatively easy (I just had to sit a test for it, found it alright). I also don't mind the class, its pretty fun, but I would definitely rather do chem as I am more interested in it.
At the moment Im really scared, because joining Chemistry, I am gonna lose my good marks in Earth and am not guaranteed to do well in Chemistry which would really negatively effect me.
Also, while catching up on the chemistry content is possible, I am really scared its gonna really negatively effect my other subjects as Im not gonna be able to put enough time into them, studying chem most of the time.
You have put all this work towards switching to chem, yet now that you are almost at the finish line, you decide to quit and turn back? You know what you want so go for it. Just treat the year 11 as prep for year 12 next term as it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme. Prove those haters wrong, do chem - - stop overthinking it and just go for itHey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.
So they did let me join and it should confirm tomorrow.
But tbh after talking with my teachers and everything, pretty much all of them advising me not to do chem, and even my parents recommended me not to do it, I think i might just be better of in earth.
While i know i did commit a large amount of work to chem, I feel joining now may set me up for failure for the rest of my subjects and i could even negatively effect me in the hsc
Currently im getting great marks in most of my subjects and I feel putting chem into the mix would degrade everything , causing my marks for other subjects to plummet as the time and stress commitment with the catch up would be substantial.
Right now I have a high work load, doing Physics ,Economics, Math Extension 1, English Advanced, Modern (gonna drop this no matter what), and obviously earth.
I feel with earth (generally an easier subject) I could focus my time to strengthening my other subjects and really pushing myself on them, (I am currently struggling in physics a bit to get high results which i want). With earth i wouldn’t have to commit to much study and still achieve high marks, therefore allowing me to focus on my harder subjects and especially improve myself in physics and extension math.
The thing is, I have decided i really want to push myself in the hsc, trying to get a 95+ Atar atleast.
If I continue with earth, is this really gonna negatively affect me in the hsc?. Am really scared if i make this decision to stay, earth will destroy my atar goal.
While I do have a passion for chemistry, and maybe I even could catch up, i feel me switching could really cause a hole in my academics.
If you guys have any thoughts or advice please reply.
I was originally adamant on switching but tbh my teachers advice and my parents thought have really made me reconsider my choice.
+ the thing is, like i said I really want to push myself in the hsc 95+. Doing chem could be beneficial to my atar but the thing is no one has achieved a band 6 for chem in my school since 2018 , which also degrades my hopes of performing well in it. I mean maybe with hard work and dedication it is possible, but am scared doing this will affect my other subjects really badly.
Say i get a 90 in earth, compared with a 75-80 in chemistry which one would be better for me in terms of scaling/ atar contribution.
Even though i feel i would love chemistry maybe i could even achieve good marks in it?, it is really a gamble with my hsc
@jimmysmith560 - your advice would be greatly helpful, and anyone else’s either !!
u can get a 95 atar with straight B5 specially for subjects like eco physics chem bio B6 is not the end of ur atarHey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.

fuckin mad cuntGuys , I did the test, somehow managed to pass and actually beat some of my friends!
My teachers said they are gonna organise f i can make a switch now i believe.
I know i really wanted to switch, but for some reason i kee second guessing myself.
Do u guys reckon it’s worth me switching?
if you got an 88 in earth it would scale down to 75.4Hey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.

also i want to add. this may just be my school and teacher, but also keep in mind its a public school. the assessments for earth tend to be quite time consuming, like not as much as chem or bio, but still on pretty similar levels. so the amount of time you save from earth when compared to chem may not be that much.Hey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.

I know, I know.. Am sorta just scared imma be be negatively effected. Plus it doesn't help that no one is supportive of my switch with my teachers and parentsYou have put all this work towards switching to chem, yet now that you are almost at the finish line, you decide to quit and turn back? You know what you want so go for it. Just treat the year 11 as prep for year 12 next term as it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme. im sure youll get great marks in earth but there are very few raw marks you could get that could get you a very high atar contribution bc of scaling. the break even point (the raw hsc mark you can get to get an equal scaled mark) is 97. so if you get below a 97 raw mark in the hsc you can expect to scale down at least a few marks. main reason why a lot of selective schools dont offer earth and a lot of similar subjects is bc they scale bad and even if raw scores are high chances of getting a band 6 are low for the reason i stated above. chems break even point is 86 is so so if you get above that youll get scaled up and get a higher scaled mark.Hey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.

oh shit i didnt see this. yeah this one is more accurate than mine. uac is a good sourceif you got an 88 in earth it would scale down to 75.4
if you got an 84 in chem it would scale to 79.4. if you got a 76 it would scale to 66.6
im using the uac scaling report for that, so not sure how accurate it actually is to atar
https://www.uac.edu.au/assets/documents/scaling-reports/scaling-report-2023-nsw-hsc.pdf
also i want to add. this may just be my school and teacher, but also keep in mind its a public school. the assessments for earth tend to be quite time consuming, like not as much as chem or bio, but still on pretty similar levels. so the amount of time you save from earth when compared to chem may not be that much.
ye lol@jimmysmith560 please give this person advice
i can go blue in the face rebutting their points and assuring them theyll be alr but you have a lot more credibility here
why do you want 95?Hey guys thanks for all the reply’s on this thread.

yeah unfortunatelyDamn, is the scaling seriously that bad for earth, holly.
if you check the most recent 2023 uac report the break even point for chem is now 100im sure youll get great marks in earth but there are very few raw marks you could get that could get you a very high atar contribution bc of scaling. the break even point (the raw hsc mark you can get to get an equal scaled mark) is 97. so if you get below a 97 raw mark in the hsc you can expect to scale down at least a few marks. main reason why a lot of selective schools dont offer earth and a lot of similar subjects is bc they scale bad and even if raw scores are high chances of getting a band 6 are low for the reason i stated above. chems break even point is 86 is so so if you get above that youll get scaled up and get a higher scaled mark.
to be specific to the 90 in earth scenario you gave, a raw 90 hsc mark in earth translated to around 80 scaled mark, while a raw 80 in chem translates to a 74 ish. you can fact check that using uac if youd like. both scale down bc both 90 in earth and 80 in chem are below the break even point.
i hope this helps. my source is uac, and the atar graphs website, both links are on this forum
in general earth has worse scaling though, especially as you get to the lower marksif you check the most recent 2023 uac report the break even point for chem is now 100
Surely it isn't that high?if you check the most recent 2023 uac report the break even point for chem is now 100
I don’t necessarily need 95, I just want to push myself as high as i can go.ye lol
why do you want 95?
