    Moderator application form

To elaborate, we consider/discuss and democratically vote on every application. There is no set criteria like that, but the team will definitely look into posts (quality, but also quantity), account creation date, but also how active the user was etc. I personally think the actual raw post...

How good is UTS Software Engineering?

Yes, that's all mostly true. Basicaly to graduate from any engineering course in Australia, you need 60 days of industry experience and possibly some related documentation/coursework - UTS handles that with the professional practice program (diploma). You don't need to become an EngAus...

How good is UTS Software Engineering?

There's a lot of threads on this both recently and over the last 10+ years if you search the forum. The general opinion/old stereotype with Engineering and Comp Sci is that UNSW has the strongest reputation for their faculty and academics, while UTS has a more practical focus and as such has the...

Laptop Recommendations for UNSW Software Engineering

I don't think you'll have major problems with either a Windows or Mac laptop. Realistically, most stuff in CS will probably need/be simplest with Linux, so it will be less hassle to just setup Ubuntu or similar in a VM rather than mess around with Windows Subsystem For Linux or Mac OSX's...

    Best university for law

They're quite far away from each other, which gives you a few things to consider. Would you have to move to either (both?) of them? What are the living costs if you are moving out? How much would you have to travel if staying at home? Where are more of your friends going?

    Lecture Slides

That would depend on what the uni/faculty/lecturer do. I even had a lecturer remove the material (and never re-add access) when our final assessment, an online quiz, started. I'd recommend downloading them before that - why risk it?

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

My favourite part is this: Good news for him is that we're nearing the end of the FY, and even forgetting potentially being overtaxed on JobKeeper, he should be getting a good tax return for having too much withheld earlier in the year. Doubt we'll see an article about that.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

I've seen this mentioned, but the effect doesn't seem too pronounced for positive cases in Australia at least. ~80-90 -> 51 was a pretty big drop though But, even excluding Easter, if the Uruguay cases are included in the count it will completely obfuscate the data for a day or two. At least...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Had by far the lowest increase from 6am yesterday to 6am today - 51. It's been around 80-100 for almost a week (reported 6am-6am and 3pm-3pm). While we seem to be flattening the curve, unfortunately over the last week a lot of countries (of note India, Russia, Sweden and Japan) have overtaken...

Life as a Civil Engineer Project Manager

I'm a software engineer, so it's very different from what a civil engineer would be doing and I know so little about civil that I don't even really know what my mates that are civil engineers do. Basically everything I do is on a computer. From a very high level i'd say my work is split roughly...

    SATs and US institutions

Out of curiosity, why Harvard and Yale if you want to study engineering? MIT is self explanatory but, even among the Ivy League universities, Harvard and Yale aren't the best known for engineering. CalTech is up there with MIT and even plenty of public universities over there like UC Berkeley...

Life as a Civil Engineer Project Manager

This, i'm a software engineer but it's the exact same there but replace "PM" with "team lead" usually. I can't speak for sure for civil engineering and other disciplines of engineering, but in software at least there is a misconception amongst some people that a "team lead" is a better paying...

    Error in Help Section?

Sure, added the dx in. No plans to support graphics, i'd recommend just saving and including it as an image.

    Error in Help Section?

Thanks, we've fixed the example provided there. We use CodeCogs for LaTex, there might be details on there about what is supported. Generally I think it's just the basic math formulas that are supported, so functionality that requires separate packages like TikZ wouldn't work.

    UTS online lectures

Refer to this earlier thread: https://www.boredofstudies.org/threads/lecture-recordings.389448/ I suspect you'll find that most of your business subjects are recorded, but most of the engineering ones won't be.

    #welcome #general-chat

Also, it's probably a bit late for this now, but i'd even consider people in your position trying to push themselves to do 3U if their school lets them (particularly when exposure to 3U content may be useful for desired uni course). 2U feels a bit easier when you are doing 3U and in a class...

    #welcome #general-chat

Don't neglect maths would be my advice. You have 12 units, so there might be a temptation to just get that band 4 and not have maths count if you are enjoying engineering and keep it - but that will just make uni a bit harder for you. So make sure you're doing all of your homework, maybe look...

    Purpose of Viruses and Worms

I'd recommend following blogs like KrebsOnSecurity (which I think gives a broad survey of security stuff), watching talks from conferences like DEFCON, BlackHat etc. That will give you ideas on what to read up on next based on your interests. If you go to uni after graduation, there'll also...

    Purpose of Viruses and Worms

It might be surprising, but a while ago (and probably even when the SDD syllabus was written) malware generally had less financial motivation than it does today. People would do it for some form of hacker cred or challenge, conspiracy theorists might also say that anti-virus developers had...

    UNSW chit chat thread

I thought it was quite valuable, I even watched all of the videos myself despite having completed a (corporate) finance major. Definitely get your friend to check out some of the videos on youtube and see if it's something they are interested in. It covers the basics of debt, interest and time...
