    Accommodation/ANU lifestyle

I can ask DS about Yukeembruk, but from our general chats, there seems to be more social activities and networking at the traditional colleges of ANU - Bruce (new buildings, but established alumni, including NeMeSiS ex students), Burton & Garran, Burgmann, John XXIII, Ursula and Wright.

    Accommodation/ANU lifestyle

Yes, Ursies is the cheapest catered hall, fairly small, friendly and currently punching above their weight in the interhall comps.😁 My son originally applied for Wright as it is the only one with the option of catered or self catered but he really enjoyed being at Ursies last year and returned...

Best textbook for Chemistry and Physics

I recommend Pearson as well. My youngest was using other textbooks recommended by her teachers, but when my son came home between university semesters, we realised he is tutoring from Pearson and his sister liked it so much, she got Pearson for both physics and biology.

11 years left - then no physics students

I suspect many people in the education depts confuse equity (which the media and public demand) with equal outcomes. It would take a lot more resources to improve the performance of the bottom students, who often are in the lowest socioeconomic quartile, so they simply drop benchmarks and that...

11 years left - then no physics students

Physics isn’t taught well at high schools. My son’s physics teacher readily admitted he didn’t understand the equations my son used in his physics assignment beyond the high school sheet, which DS used to account for friction in the real world vs frictionless reality, so gave him 100%. Probably...

    Thoughts on iPads for school?

In between the prices of the generation 10 and Pro is the iPad Air. I bought my youngest an Air at the beginning of last year for Yr 11, with the full Microsoft suite. It is also fine with Geogebra software which her school uses for maths extension 1 & 2. I’m sorry if it’s still out of your...

    y8 maths tutoring recs? (online)

Is the Yr 7 student at JRAHS? Curious why you’re specifically requesting an ex James Ruse graduate. In the pre-digital era, I actually received the JRAHS maths master’s medal and was his ‘trailblazer’ for Olympiads etc, but my son, who chose to attend our local public school, is a far better...

    gap year

My eldest was 16 when she finished her HSC and because she wanted to do medicine, I encouraged her to take a gap year to make sure it was what she really wanted. She volunteered at a nursing home and loved helping the elderly residents and she was well loved by them and their families, which...

does anyone know anything abt mclaffertys rearrangements in esters 😭

There are plenty of explanations on the internet, so unsure what you are seeking specifically. https://www.chemistrylearner.com/mclafferty-rearrangement.html Essentially, it was a phenomenon discovered specifically with mass spectrometry, a method used to identify molecules by their overall...

    question about sanger sequencing

DNA is amplified before the sequencing step. Thirty cycles produce about a billion DNA templates, so for example, if the ddNTP:dNTP ratio is 1:1000, then a million fragments would be the ballpark number for each terminating ddNTP representing any particular position, so the probability that a...

    Piano

Music 1 is a bit disappointing in how poorly it scales. My son, a self taught musician, scored 96 in Music 1 but it scaled so poorly, it wasn’t included in his ATAR. Ah well, at least he enjoyed taking it as a subject. @Life’sHard, so what do you think of the dynamics of his latest arrangement...

My son does offer 1-to-1 online maths tutoring ($65/hr). He tutors Yr 11 & 12 students rather than primary aged students, but if you are interested in a free hour trial lesson, I would be happy to give you his email address.

What Is The Latest You Can Switch A HSC Subject

A lot of schools offer compacted programs for individual subjects in Yr 11, so there must be ways to cover preliminary & HSC content in the one year, but no way they can enrol a student a couple of months before the HSC.

What Is The Latest You Can Switch A HSC Subject

I agree with you - I don’t think they can since the school has to submit assessment marks. The student wouldn’t have completed the tasks (assignments, tests, trials), so they would have to give them zero for all the assessments that they missed.

Choosing schools for OC (opportunity class) test application - NSW

I’m not trying to elicit identifying info, but is your child already at Beecroft Public? Beecroft Public ranked third overall in the last NAPLAN (https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/naplan-year-5-results-the-state-s-top-schools-revealed-20230222-p5cmls.html). That sort of result suggests that...

    HSC verbs confusion

You might find this previous BoS thread useful: https://boredofstudies.org/threads/difference-between-evaluate-and-assess.316123/ ‘Assess’ and ‘Evaluate’ do overlap a fair bit; in an ‘assessment’, you’re generally given some criteria against which given data should be compared, whilst in an...

Why does the base and number have to be positive for logs?

I did include ‘but this might be too early for you OP if you are doing stage 5 maths.’ It actually sounded like OP might be doing Yr 11 maths even though they are in Yr 10. Generally, I think it’s a better approach to teaching to say ‘yes, you’re right, but that’s something you’ll learn about...
