    A taste of higher mathematics!

What exactly does one say about knight's tour? It's not a great motivator for graph theory because it's a contrived puzzle and doesn't make use of interesting concepts. Its solutions aren't particularly interesting and don't generalise well to other problems. AFAICT all you can really say is...

    State Rank Mark?

I was 1st and I'm friends with some of the other state rankers

    State Rank Mark?

In 2012, raw 97 was 1st in course (98 scaled), and the lowest state rank (6th place or 8th or whatever) was around 94-95 IIRC.

    does anyone here do software

Come on... 95% of SDD is bullshit memorisation. There are minimal amounts of higher-order thinking in some sections, but it's nothing compared to maths or physics or english any subject that actually requires thinking.

    > SDD > higher order thinking lol

    Controversial Creatives

My English teacher used to ask us to pretty please not write about suicide, because if we did he was obliged by school rules to notify the counsellor.

    Which option topic?

The hardware topic is more objective and mathematical. You don't have to worry so much about phrasing your answers correctly.

    Your budget

Last 2 months in London: cash, $1,665.00 (mostly for food and going out) rent, $6,800 (for just one room in a sharehouse. Absurdly high because I had to pay two deposits, and London rent is mindblowing) groceries and stuff, $479.15 transport, $564.25 (again, London prices...) entertainment...

    Civil vs Software Engineering?

Your relatives must not be as good as you think. If they graduated from NYU/Yale/Princeton and worked for major tech companies and banks, they will be getting emails from recruiters all over the world on a daily basis. If you're a competent programmer, it's very easy to get a high-paying job...

    computer science worth doing

USyd's Bachelor of Information Technology with major in CS is their more intensive version of UNSW's BSc(CS. It has a cutoff of 97.8. The cutoff isn't a good indicator of the difficulty of the course, it's a function of the number of students accepted for that course and the demand for the course.

Is a 6 figure salary possible with a CS or SE degree?

The amount of misinformation in this thread is astounding. "Assembly languages" refers to a very specific type of very low level language, where language keywords translate more-or-less directly into binary commands. No one is using assembly for anything that's not bit-twiddling at the...

    Extension 3 maths

http://www.unsw.edu.au/sites/default/files/documents/HSC_Pathways_brochure_web.pdf Yeah discrete maths would probably complement MX2 better than MATH1141. I don't think it would improve students' MX2 performance though. I found MATH1081 to be a pathetically easy course, whereas MX2 was hard...

    Information Technology/ Computing Degrees 2015

Big-O notation is not important in itself -- it's a language to talk about algorithmic efficiency, which is extremely important. It's a useful language because it's easy to estimate, intuitive, powerful, and has a very precise mathematical definition. A programmer tries to make their code...

too many people aiming for 99.95?

If you end up with 99.90, you will forever have a niggling voice in the back of your head that says "if you'd just written one more practice essay..."

    Extension 3 maths

UNSW does offer a maths course (MATH1141 IIRC) to accelerated HS students. Or at least, they did in 2012. There's also a difference in that there's no HS equivalent to COMP1917, whereas there's overlap between MATH1141 and 3u/4u maths. If a student was doing a uni maths course and a HS maths...

UNSW vs USYD for computer science

This attitude is a product of fear mongering. Good developers are in extremely high demand and have been for a long time. If you are a good developer, your job can never be replaced by some shitty Indian developer hacking away in a PHP sweatshop. This question doesn't make sense. "Computer...

    Information Technology/ Computing Degrees 2015

The engineer/developer/programmer distinction is not so clear-cut, and varies based on company and location. For example, Google calls its main developer role "Software Engineer", but in Canada it's illegal to call oneself an engineer unless one has official engineering certifications, so Google...

    Information Technology/ Computing Degrees 2015

I think the problem is that the term 'IT' is overloaded in this thread (and in popular culture too). The difference is explained here: http://online.king.edu/information-technology/difference-between-a-computer-science-information-technology-degree/ Essentially, IT focuses on dealing with...
