Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

A curve can cross a horizontal asymptote. Remember, the horizontal asymptote is the behaviour of the curve EVENTUALLY. It's not like a vertical asymptote that absolutely cannot be crossed for normal functions. Besides, the fact that the degree of the denominator > degree numerator is enough to...

    General Thoughts: Mathematics Extension 1

Definitely E4. As for what mark it aligns to, I am estimating 94-95. Leaning more towards 94.

    General Thoughts: Mathematics Extension 1

They most likely made the paper easier intentionally in response to the decreasing number of students taking calculus courses. The last time a moderately difficult binomial question was put in the paper was 2011 HSC. This is what happened as a result...

    General Thoughts: Mathematics Extension 1

Transcription error, you'll still get the mark (assuming the marker spotted the correct answer in your working out).

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

This is a tough one, I am not completely sure whether you would be awarded full marks or not for this response.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

I am back, and just reverted the file to how it was before!

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

I am out atm so I cannot fix it now, but cheers for pointing it out. Very unusual for the solutions to have reverted itself like that for no reason. I do not remember the mark allocations, the answer depends on that.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

I fixed that up a few minutes ago. Cheers for pointing it out anyway!
  9. Carrotsticks

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

That's strange. I didn't edit it back, so not sure why it decided to do that. Anyway, I'll fix it now, cheers for pointing that out.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

If everything else was correct, then no you would have not lost a mark. It is a 1 mark question only. Docking you for that categorises you in the same class as students who did not attempt the question, which is of course ridiculous.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

No. They ask you to copy/trace it so you have a diagram to work with, and so they can refer to your diagram if you've made any labels etc and used them in your solution without first defining them explicitly.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

Definitely not. My solutions are by no means intended to be the solutions I were to put in if I were doing the exam myself. I've made them intentionally more elaborate etc for the benefit of students doing the HSC in future years reading my solutions to learn!

Terry Lee's Solutions to the 2015 Extension 1 HSC

Didn't interpret that you were trying to be negative or anything. Regardless, all good!

We all make mistakes. Did you see the crazy ones I made in my solutions initially?!

That is also valid, and an excellent method too.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

If you still had the correct exact value and THEN threw it in the calculator for your final line, you would've gotten 3 marks still.

Carrotsticks' Solutions 2015 Extension 1 HSC

12 (b) (ii): Only one mark. 12 (c) (ii): Possibly zero marks, 1 if generous. 14 (c) (iii): If the sum was correct, then you may still get 2 marks considering the location of the question in the paper (as a general rule of thumb, the later into the paper, the more generous the marking).
