    Pure Vs Applied Mathematics

As much as I'd like to say "real" maths is my preferance, I like "engineering" maths far more. Mainly because of modelling, DE etc...

All Rounders by School (Top 10)

I guess it'd also be good to take into account cohort size. Wouldn't matter much for some schools but could be a deciding factor for say SBHS v NSBHS.

    getting your marks by sms?

I got mine around 5:30 but I knew others who got it around 6:15 so its quite inconsistent. Last name starts with M

How does your school award the dux?

Our school only awards one dux so in the event of a tie its based of the estimated aggregate.

Just to add, ties in non Extension courses are broken by valuing internal marks over external.

    What's your dream car?

A Ferrari 328 or Jaguar XK. As a realistic post-uni car, I'd probably go for an R34 or RX7. Maybe even an RX9. Check out the renders, the car looks gorgeous.

    Capital Punishment

I used to be staunchly against it but now I'm not so sure. I can't remember the name of the study but it said that the threat of capital punishment reduced murders to such an extant that for every inmate executed 18 citizens were saved.

How much does it matter if you get second in your course?

Yeah that makes sense. Seems unfair to have a few people drag a cohort down.
  11. M

How much does it matter if you get second in your course?

It's not actually your rank which is used to figure out internal marks. What happens is they get your internal mark and they transform that into a z-values (basically the number of standard deviations above or below the mean). Mistake in the exam!

It does matter but they would obviously just want you to ignore it. The difference usually isn't that great anyway. Here's a link for the curious: http://www.ausetute.com.au/nernst.html

    band 6 cut-off.

I remember 81/82 got you a 90 in 2009 so depending on the difficulty of the paper it should be around here.

How did you know (for sure) that your course is the one you want to do??

Sorry about dot points but this is pretty much how I did it. Saying that...you'll never really be able to know for sure 100% until you actually start working I guess. -Work Experience -Talking to people in that profession -Talking to uni students -Think about what subjects you do at school...

Making own study notes VS using BOS's

It is the act of making the notes where you learn the most
  19. M

How do you stop making silly/stupid mistakes in exams??

What I do is to do the paper at maximum speed and then do it again on the actual exam paper. Cross check and do any questions with different answers again.
