Pretty much. Physics 1A is a large learning curve compared to HSC physics. HSC adds little advantage anyways, a better understanding of maths would be more advantageous. Since its a 1st year course they'll teach you from scratch, though theres probably bridging courses you can do.

That DuPoint formula, its not necessarily new content since its embedded in one of the chapters (like ~2pages?) we had to learn anyways They told us about it but just said we wouldn't be examined on it (2011).

Its true that doing maths would be somewhat more appropriate if he plans to do finance. But there is also no point in doing it just for the sake of "enhanced perceived employability". Are you already doing BCOM/SCI? If not are you willing to spend the extra year at uni + extra contact hours...
