Ext 2 Maths Overated? Yay or Nay

4 unit is overrated for sure. I've heard students say "you gotta do pages of working out for 1 question", which made it sound intense, but when I started and finished the course, I only ever did 1 page of working out maximum, and it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. So they pretty much...

    ATAR aim?

Your ATAR aim would depend on what field you want to study at university. Eg. if you want to do medicine, you'll need to aim for at least 98-99, or if you want to do Engineering aim for at least 92-93, as the cut-offs can vary each year depending on the demand for a particular uni. UNSW is an...

    Study Techniques anyone?

Link any previous knowledge related to the topic you are studying. Also, research about it on the internet from different sources, if possible, until it clicks in for you. Then apply this knowledge by doing practice questions/past papers, maths in particular.

Anyone here play Team Fortress 2?

My favourites are the soldier and spy. Although spy is hard to play as there's always paranoid pyros spy checking around the place. Great game nonetheless.

    Graphs: help!

I agree with Shadow - you need to know your basic graphs i.e. trig functions, quadratic, exponential, cubic, logarithmic, hyperbolic etc. If the graphing happens to be quite obscure, you can just plug in x values and form a pattern. Also take into account as the graph goes to infinity (x ->...

    Is IPT hard?

IPT is not really that hard of a subject, but in fact, it's considered one of the easier subjects. It's a great subject, and even though theres quite a bit of theory to learn, it is fun to learn and in some ways, relates to a bit of physics - such as binary representing voltage states. I'd...

    Having fun at school

Hey all, here is a video compilation of what my friends and I have been doing at school the past year. Credits go to Keplaffintech for the video. Enjoy  http://youtu.be/y34On7ZfwN0 Song is Give Me Some Ammunition by Bagelism.

Final days for subject selection for the undecided :L

You could do Maths. Extension 1 and English Extension 1, hence you have 14 units. Extension maths aligns and scales very well, that is if you perform quite well, and it would definitely help into getting into medicine.

can i still get 80 atar?

I assume those are your raw marks - in which case I think you are meant to moderate and align them first, then average them out with your estimated aligned exam marks, and then enter the final result into the atar calculator.
  11. TheCardician

difference between raw mark, hsc mark, aligned mark, scaled mark???

Well, the 80% raw mark would be scaled, not the aligned mark. Advanced English had a scaled mean of 32.5 in 2010, so if you attained your 80 raw, it'll scale to 32.5/50 (65/100), which is pretty good compared to the scaling of many other subjects.

difference between raw mark, hsc mark, aligned mark, scaled mark???

Raw mark is the mark that is attained after the exam has been marked; eg. you do say a 3 unit maths exam, and you get 63/84 - that is your raw mark. Now, this mark is not released to you. First the board of studies aligns the raw mark according to standards, so since 3 unit maths aligns very...

    Scaling and alignment?!

Wait, don't they scale the raw marks, not the aligned marks?

Can we eat during our exams

During our IPT exam, one of the supervisors went around and gave us all cookies. Was the best haha. Problem Cookie Monster?

    Difficult circle geometry?

    Atar estimate!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I reckon you're looking at 99.7-99.95
  17. TheCardician

    Erm... estimate your mark ...

I'd probably get ~67/84. I was surprised, the exam seemed relatively easier than some of the past papers I had done, well that is for questions 1-5, and a bit of 6. My class thought the exam was pretty hard.

Lolworthy comment from marker's notes for ext1 maths

Fudging is where you do working out that can relate or not relate to a proof question, but proving it without proper reasoning, thereby skipping many steps, or writing persuasive garbage, and saying something like "hence a-b < a+b". This is probably commonly done in induction lol - especially...

    Complex numbers help

Q1) You need to multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of 1-4i which is 1+4i; so:1+4i/(1+4i)(1-4i) = 1+4i/1+16 = (1+4i)/17 Q2) You can either express it as a sum of two cubes, or just expand them both as is: (2-3i)^3 = 8-36i+54i^2 -27i^3 = 8-36i-54+27i = 62-63i...

how much do you think you got?

According to Shadowdude's mark, yes 59/120 aligns to 83 - but that was last year. Aligning could slightly change this year, so I'd say 50/120 aligns to ~78-81. Could be wrong.
