Most annoying book of all time

    Perhaps :P

Most annoying book of all time

The Skull Beneath the Skin by PD James; awful crime fiction text. I studied it in English Ext.1, but that's not why I hate it. James' prose is verbose and the plot is rubbish. NB. I did like Ext.1 - what I mean by "that's not why I hate it" is that one may often hate a book simply because they...

    Republic?

Absolutely. We have worn-off the need for "Mother Britain." It makes me cringe when I think of the fact that Keating lost office just as he was getting the case for an Australian Republic off the ground.

    English is stupid

No, you are wrong. Literature is, amongst other things, work that critiques and analyses society; namely ideas, social structures, values etc. You are either trolling, or invested in wilful ignorance. I do hope it is the former.

    English is stupid

Thank you, and others like you on this thread, for demonstrating an absolutely banal understanding of literature and cinematography.

    The Official Basketball Thread

I think we will see a great improvement in the Lakers. Kobe no longer has the burden of not only creating his own shots, but creating shots for everyone else; not to mention that in the past he has had to bail his team out on several occasions. If Bynum continues to improve and Gasol gets...

    Is feminism evil?

Strident feminism can be absurd, but not evil. I hate to be the semantics person, but I don't think that you can demonstrate feminism to be "profoundly immoral and malevolent."

    Do you believe in God?

No. In relation to religious beliefs: believe what you want, go to church/mass/prayer at the local mosque etc...doesn't matter to me. Though having said that, if you feel so inclined that I should believe as you do -say, for instance, that I must be saved or else face eternal punishment- and...

    Frankenstein

Hmm, I only read summaries after I've read the book, just to make sure that I've grasped the main ideas. Also, I second those above me who said that it was an enjoyable read. Studying it has turned out to be quite interesting. As one poster said, try to forget that it's for school, which is not...

How much have you guys done?

3000 words so far for my Critical Response. The wordlimit is less for the CR, so I'm not all that far away from finishing. I suspect that I'll be drafting a number of times, though.

worst/best english novel you have ever read in school?

Best: Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies; also, The Book Thief was a nice read. Worst: The Skull Beneath the Skin (I haven't read any of her other stuff, but this was really terrible prose from PD James), As You Like It (just a sub-par Shakespeare)
