    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Students in Germany are doing their final exams now at school, with the obvious hygiene and distancing precautions. So it shouldn’t be surprising similiar measures will happen here.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

I suspect the rostering system would look like what some workplaces are adopting. For example, half the class is rostered to turn up for face-to-face learning for one week and then in the second week they are rostered to stay home (and swap with the other half of the class).

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

I think care needs to be taken to distinguish between people who don’t have symptoms at an observed point in time (but then develop them later on) and people who never show symptoms at all. Asymptomatic transmission captures both the above types but the vast majority of them fall into that...

    Probability and statistics question thread

Where are these questions coming from? There are concepts in there beyond the HSC syllabus.

Which trial papers are usually the most difficult?

You are given raw marks for BoS trials. Any artificial adjustment in the context of a voluntary trial exam does not really achieve anything.

Flowchart of how HSC marks and ATAR are determined

Hi all, We have received a lot of questions on the aspects of the HSC and ATAR calculation process ranging from scaling, moderating and aligning. It has become apparent that some confusion exists on how the process works overall. This is important to understand before diving into the finer...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Would treat that lower figure with caution because testing activity is usually lower on weekends (and it’s the Easter weekend as well). There is also a rescue plane full of like 70 positive cases that landed from Uruguay so not sure how that will get incorporated into the count. Also, call me...

Which trial papers are usually the most difficult?

Possibly, but it’s still early days. Not at the moment. It comes down to whether we can recruit people to form a team to write up a paper for other subjects. We would like to gauge if there is enough interest from students for other subjects as well.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

I think the current restrictions should remain in place until we have truly flattened the curve for a sustained period of time (something like 0.0-0.5% sustained growth rate over the rest of April perhaps - we're currently at 1-3% growth rate in the past week) and reduce the proportion of...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

The restrictions as they currently stand are very blunt. The benefit of having a blunt tool is that it is the quickest means to control the immediate problem of an exponential growth of infections. The restrictions could be more targeted to those that have an actual impact on reducing...

Agreed. SARS was brought under control without a vaccine. This is obviously a bigger scale pandemic but longer term there needs to be an optimal middle ground with restrictions vs infection risk.

Which trial papers are usually the most difficult?

As mentioned previously, it is too early to make that call.

HSC 2020 & COVID: Where does this leave us?

For most schools only the term 4 assessment has taken place. It would not be fair down the track if it turns out that no other assessments (like trial exams) can take place at all and therefore that one term 4 assessment is retrospectively re-weighted to 100% (it's a similar argument against...

Which trial papers are usually the most difficult?

The reference sheet is usually provided on the day.

HSC 2020 & COVID: Where does this leave us?

The adjustment of assessment weightings would be fine as a short term fix if this crisis is over by say July, because subsequent assessments can still occur afterwards with higher weightings. If it goes on any longer than that and crucial assessments such as trial exams cannot be held, NESA...

Which trial papers are usually the most difficult?

The BoS trials typically occur in October every year just before the HSC exams usually commence. This will indeed be the first year it will be written under the new syllabus, but there is the added uncertainty of NESA's decisions for this year's HSC exams. It is too early to make any calls on...

HSC 2020 & COVID: Where does this leave us?

This is perhaps the most practical solution tbh - sitting the exams spread across different rooms across the school and even having them come in staggered groups of say 30 minutes apart allocated to a different room (with a different starting time). It can certainly work whilst still maintaining...
