    ANU Chatter Thread

Re: ANU 2011 Semester 1 Chatter Thread Ah, the advantages of an orange username. :P I will however delete any posts that aren't somewhat ANU-related.

Confused About Ranking And Internal Marks.... Help????

You'd get 100. Although if you actually did do that, I think the Board might pick up on it and wonder if there's something going on. :P

Uni, 4hrs straight of lessons too much?

2 hours is hard enough for me, 4 hours would be quite painful. :P Then again I live on campus so home is never more than 10 minutes away so I don't have any of those other considerations. If I lived off-campus I'd take 4 hours straight and I'm sure I'd manage.

    ANU/Canberra 2011 Rollcall

I've been told informally that it's not really enforced as long as you're not too obvious or excessive about it, but I haven't had any guests over so I don't know how true that is. (According to the 2010 Bruce handbook, at Bruce it's 2 weeks a year, not a semester.) Our office staff are nice...

    ANU/Canberra 2011 Rollcall

The enrolment form is the important thing. Just bring along everything though (including your TFN and some photo ID if they need it).

    Uni ID's and societies

Definitely worth going for your licence, although Ls are quite pricey in Canberra as you have to attend the two-day Road Ready course ($155) + the licence itself ($45.50). I don't have a car and don't plan on getting one, but I'm still going for my Ps this year.

When are we suppose to buy textbooks?

For some courses the textbook will be mandatory, for others it will be merely recommended, meaning that you'll buy it, never look at it, and half of it will be in the reading brick anyway. That said, I've bought quite a lot of textbooks simply because I think it would be nice to have on the...

    Eng Advanced vs Standard?

Motivation will be a problem in Standard as well, and in Standard you have the extra disadvantage of being in a class with all the other Standard people. I did Standard because I hate English, and in hindsight I should have chosen Advanced.

    Uni ID's and societies

Which invariably they won't. :P IIRC Laurus Wing has magstripe cards but they haven't linked it with the ANU Security system yet?

    Uni ID's and societies

AWESOME. I've wondered when we'd finally upgrade to RFIDs like everyone else...

    Enquiry about Uni Clubs

Find the details for the appropriate club contact person (these should be on the web somewhere) and arrange with them. Sometimes you can join when you turn up to a club event.

    Uni ID's and societies

They do revalidations in Manning Clark during the first few weeks. You don't get a new card if you revalidate, just new stickers to change the expiry dates. The Book Depository. Enough said. I'm fairly sure you can't. It would stuff their enrolment procedures up somewhat.

    Choosing first year courses

Remember that you have five years to complete your degree, so you can do more first year courses next year. Do you have to do MATH and STAT in first year, or do you just need to make sure you've done them by the end of your degree? If the latter, could you take one of them next year?

    not eligible for HECS-HELP?

A few months possibly, but certainly not years. Even if it takes three months to come through, you could just pay your first semester up front then put everything else on HECS.

UAC Offers 2011 - Downloadable [now with the Early February Round!]

Re: UAC Offers 2011 - Downloadable I believe they can sometimes enrol over the number of places they're funded for. It's a complex system.

textbooks and HECS HELP for summer/winter school?

Generally you can't get HECS for summer schools, as they're DFEE courses rather than CSP courses. Pros: you get ahead in your degree Cons: cost, less holidays, possibly intensity of teaching?

    Laptops for Uni

Re: Is there any use bringing a laptop to uni? Made worse by the fact that the time when you're rushing a last minute assignment is precisely the time the printers are most likely to be out of paper and the lines for the computers will be the longest.
