    Raw Marks Thread

Really? I only got 88/105 for trials (and this dragged down my internal rank), but I got a 92 external and 94 internal. I thought 92 HSC mark would be like low 80s.

    UMAT

The UMAT is meant to be hard, but you can definitely prepare for it. I don't know about private tutoring, but I found that just doing HEAPS of papers and drills from various sources was really beneficial. As you do more and more practice and read the worked solutions/explanations, you gradually...

    I need some answers...

Don't drop, just keep motivated and study even harder. Amazing comebacks are possible.

    Questions about transferring USYD Law

Shouldn't you be eligible for some bonus points? Or is that only at UNSW?

    10 units vs 12 units.

I did 12 units, but I dropped down to 10 units after trials. I regret not just dropping that extra 2 units at the end of Yr 11, would've had more time to study.

    Business Studies Vs Economics

Both subjects aren't pre-requisites or assumed knowledge for any uni courses, so you should just pick the ones that you think you'll do best in and maximise your ATAR. Note: Economics scales higher than Business Studies

4 period from 6 period days

6 periods is better. The longer the lesson, the more time the teacher wastes learning a single topic. Usually at the end of the lesson you do nothing anyways, because your attention-span naturally decreases, whether you like it or not. That's why you should study in short study blocks, rather...

    Subject selection help

You should drop Music, so you can use that extra time to lift up your marks for the other subjects. However, like everyone said above, don't sit back and relax just because you have less units: be productive with your time. Proper time management is sooooo important in the HSC.

Song as related text, yay or nay?

Generally, song lyrics aren't a good choice for a related text, because they are often unsubstantial for adequate analysis. However, I would highly recommend using a music video (both the song and video), because that way you have more also have a visual to analyse. Preferably use an older song...

Any tips for preparing for Year 11?

Be consistent throughout the entire year. And NEVER give up. You're bound to have disappointing results, but use them as motivation to work even harder.

    best textbooks:

For Physics, I would recommend getting Physics in Focus, Jacaranda and Dotpoint. It's always good to have 2 sources of information: I found Physics in Focus easier to understand, while Jacaranda would offer further 'depth in knowledge'. Use Dotpoint wisely. I know a lot of people don't like it...

    Free Periods

Ideally, you should be trying to use these free periods wisely for study, but as many people pointed out, it usually becomes a time for socializing. Honestly, I reckon you should take some time out from your rigorous study timetable to chill and relax, especially when you have 5 more hours of...

    Need some tips please.

Spend a lot of time revising your practice essays/creative, and constantly give it to teachers/tutors/peers to read and criticize.

    Studying

Pretty much what strawberrye said, but I'll just what I think is important. Skim over the textbook (Excel, Conquering Chem, Jacaranda) over these holidays. Try to understand the chemical concepts, but you don't necessarily need to memorise them. The difficulty of the course comes from the large...

Is it worth it to get a UMAT tutor?

I reckon that while a tutor could probably teach you some Section 1 and Section 3 techniques, I found that studying for UMAT was a lot of self-directed learning. You learn the techniques and the 'way-of-thinking' from practising drills and practice papers. Start early, do as much practice as you...
