    Who wants a job?

I dunno, I was born in '86 and people seem to take me pretty seriously.... ....or maybe it could be because you are flying in the face of science. While the Australian Libertarian Society seem to be climate change sceptics being so is not exactly a requirement for being an An-Cap (or any other...

Strong and effective climate change policy, that doesn't involve a great, big new tax

Re: Strong and effective climate change policy, that doesn't involve a great, big new Which sounds good? My guess at Abbott's policy or my own idea?

Re: Strong and effective climate change policy, that doesn't involve a great, big new Abbott isn't a climate change sceptic.

Strong and effective climate change policy, that doesn't involve a great, big new tax

Re: Strong and effective climate change policy, that doesn't involve a great, big new Big subsidies and tax breaks for green industry (and maybe nuclear power/uranium exports) would seem the only thing that matches his description... personally I favour a carbon-tax coupled to a GST reduction...

Should police have any powers that ordinary citizens don't?

I see your irony and raise you: I work in the federal public service.

    Tony Abbott new opposition leader

This should not be a debate about climate change it should be a debate about the best way to address climate change. The CPRS/ETS proposed by the ALP is clearly not the best way to address the problem, the Libs need to make this the focus of the debate. You do realise that going it alone...

Is it morally wrong to break the law?

Yes it pretty much does. After all I could peacefully non-comply with all laws restricting victimless crimes (drugs, other 'moral' laws, etc). And could also peacefully non-comply with all intellectual property laws.

    White Australia

Living in the past dear fren. I think you're right that people stick to their own but defining 'their own' on racialist terms is naive at best - the power of society is it's ability to evolve and adapt to create a binding culture and associated norms/mores/etc. While mass migration could...

    White Australia

Certainly an influx of migrants would have changed the make-up of Australia but I disagree that it would have been a bad thing. Who is to say that we couldn't have been an early multi-cultural society?

My my how far you have fallen... what of the dignity of all human beings? Their right to pursue happiness and such?

If it was purely economics and living standards which were the concern then surely a minimum wage would have been a more appropriate policy instrument. (not that I agree with either instrument)

I'm all for the abolition of slavery - but the WAP was also a racist immigration program, and while all slavery abolition is good emancipation is far better than deportation.

    Age of consent?

What is the best way then? People submitting to a physical exam by their GP and a psych exam by a shrink, then submitting the signed paperwork and getting a license to have sex? While I agree that the age of consent is an arbitrary number which is at best a mean/median age at which people...

    White Australia

You are falling into the trap of relativism. A trap which the school syllabus via teachers like yourself almost force feeds students. Moral and cultural relativism is the road to ruin. By saying that white australia policy was "a good policy for the time" you are opening the door to every...

    Natural monopolies?

There are plenty of sound frameworks which help to realistically define an industry (Porter's five forces for example) and therefore define whether or not a monopoly exists. Using your example the convenience store is not a monopoly because the industry it is in is retail small-goods and...

    White Australia

Somewhat disturbed and indeed perturbed that a history teacher has such a flawed view of the white australia policy. While the Pacific Island Labourers Act 1901 effectively ended kanaka slavery and together with the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 formed the basis of the White Australia policy...

Is it morally wrong to break the law?

The various foundations of legitimacy have significant difference though - so much so that a law could be legitimate from one persepective but illegitimate from another... is it then moral for some groups to willfully break the law and for others to comply with it? How is that kind of legal...
