    Bushfires

I'm with katie.... I don't think that forcible evacuation of children is feasible... 1. it takes time that you don't necasserily have 2. parents will resist (will you arrest them? maybe shoot them?) Oh and wait for the backlash when the bus full of kidnapped children is caught in the...

    Greg Bird glassing conviction quashed

A far stronger man accidentaly glassing someone requires a leap of imagination that I'm not prepared to make.

    Greg Bird glassing conviction quashed

Weak and overly complex explannation imo.... the simplest explannation is most likely the correct one... I still think he glassed her... He could potentially sue sharks/nrl but regardless of his guilt they could argue that he still bought the sport into ill-repute and that's why they fired him...

    Bushfires

Valid point but still it's pretty inconvenient for your house to burn down (and most people are under-insured which is a seperate problem).

    Bushfires

I've been in the situation on several occassions (sup black christmas fires burning down 5 houses on my parents street) and I think the correct response depends on the exact scenario. I think the policy is good in that it does not forcibly remove people (which would be a violation of their...

    Age of consent?

    1. A five year age gap is not considered pedophilia. Unless one of the people is <16 2. In NSW the legal age for a male to consent to hetero sex was 16 but homo was 18. I understand that they are both now 16.

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

Gillard isn't proposing anything near as radical as the ideas being tossed around in this thread. Also I highly doubt that you would get any such guarantees from a party which is ideologically committed to the tax and spend welfare state.

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

Touché. Also sometimes I slip into sounding like a politician it is a side effect of my statist job. Though your proposition covers a phase-out of HECS not a phase out of YA. I assume that similarly the max amount paid would fall as a percentage of the current. 100%>75%>etc. While all this is...

Who says universities should be public? Also before university was 'free' there were fees.

    Age of consent?

AFAIK the (nsw) legislation currently provides for a degree of flexibility regarding teens who are close in age and/or close to the cut-off. Had to research it once for one of my brothers.... hilarious story...

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

It's rare for me to argue in favour of new government programs but in this case I think that the program in place is so large and so deeply integrated into our education system that a phased withdrawal (involving new more market driven programs) is required. What alternative would you propose?

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

There are few self-funded retirees because the current generation of retirees were in the workforce before superannuation and during a time where there was a deal of sorts that they would pay high taxes and recieve pensions. Even the baby-boomers now entering retirement have spent less than 50%...

    Age of consent?

Pretty open-ended topic but what are people's thoughts on the age of consent? Is it too high, too low? Should we be talking about an age at all or would maturity/physiology be a better gauge and if so how would that work? Are there gray areas and if so how should they be dealt with?

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

Government doesn't work with you as a distinct financial entity though so all of this income transfer creates distortions. More importantly though why is it the government's responsibility to smooth your income (increase it as a student/pensioner and reduce it as a working adult). This income...

    Youth Allowance Eligibility

Getting towards what I suggested in my first reply :p PS: I think it's a pretty good idea because as you say it transforms YA from a loss to a loan. Though as with my idea you have to consider why the market isn't offering it already.... note that afaik some banks do offer living expenses...
