Well I would think certain anime would be suitable for using as related text, but I need more information about your prescribed + the series you are considering to do. You would be "allowed to" for HSC exams but your English department might be a bit negative towards you doing anime series. So...

You can always do 3 unit at TAFE.

I didn't receive an economic textbook before about half way through term 4(2013). But you'll probably be alright! At least for the first few weeks.
