    CADETSHIPS 2012 Discussion Thread

Good for you and I totally believe you </sarcasm>. What do you actually do at UBS as a cadet?

    cadetships

I have a few friends on the various business cadetships and assure you that it's nowhere near that vicinity. Remember a cadetship is a full time job for someone with NO qualifications and is fresh out of high school.

Will an commerce degree majoring accounting help me later I want to be a CEO.

It might help you get there if you take the path of say, working in an accounting firm in audit, moving to consulting, moving to financial reporting, moving to deputy CFO, etc... and eventually CEO. But I wouldn't bet on it alone. i.e. Do an MBA. ps. Accounting > Finance for most things other...

Diesel cars - yay or nay?

Thought I would share my latest run from the Hills District to the city: Man, I love diesels. It's a good 1/3 of the fuel usage of my manager's 911 Carerra, and mine is much easier to live with :) ... but I wouldn't necessarily say no to a swap!

doesnt anyone take this subject seriously?

I was thinking in my case, it's because my work revolves around investigation of fraud in accounting which is inherently linked to understanding the systems behind it which gave rise to the opportunity to create the fraud in the first place. We hold interviews with people from within the...

    Hsc ipt

The challenge with IPT is that the smaller candidature size both within each school and overall in the HSC means that as a %, there's a lot more people who are achieving high ranks/marks in this subject relative to other subjects. Couple this with the fact that the subject doesn't feel that...

How to achieve a band 6 in business studies, prelim and hsc.

The devil is in the detail. There's so many small things to remember which are seemingly useless but could potentially be examined. I missed out on a band six in this subject (just) but for me my strategy was to try and think of as many examples to link back to the syllabus and then demonstrate...

Diesel cars - yay or nay?

I seem to recall reading in my manual specifically NOT to try that!

    CADETSHIPS 2012 Discussion Thread

They were the "business cadetships" which only lasted for a year or two before dying out- despite the name, the roles were very accounting (i.e. daily/monthly/quarterly reporting) and administration based. Not sure how many companies have brought them back but as far as I know they're still...

Is it true that UTS business school is absolutely crap?

Even TS and actuarial doesn't pay that well for a first year grad at Big 4 as far as I know but I could be wrong. ... but I'm 99% sure it isn't audit since $70k is round about a first year fresh senior accountant. Back on topic though, university doesn't matter that much especially in...

doesnt anyone take this subject seriously?

Disagree- seeing a lot of my colleagues in the Commerce industry (but no doubt require some IT skills), I have come to better appreciate the stuff (particularly the areas identified above such as reading data flowcharts) I learnt in high school. I'm not saying people have no idea about them, but...

    CADETSHIPS 2012 Discussion Thread

Have you done absolutely no research into what you applied for?!?! I don't think you grasp the basics of what you've signed up for either in terms of the job or the firm, and you seem very focussed on the trivial and shallow aspects of a cadetship. In short, all the answers to your questions...

    CADETSHIPS 2012 Discussion Thread

I'd say the ratio is closer to 70:30, at least in my firm. And I'm in external audit- typically an internal audit won't be any different since you're still a trainee, a cadet, or an undergraduate consultant.

    CADETSHIPS 2012 Discussion Thread

Depends on the firm. Typically it'll be "Trainee auditor" or "Cadet".

doesnt anyone take this subject seriously?

I would probably go further than that and say it's more useful to people who don't do an IT degree because this sorta stuff won't be included in any curriculum yet it'll be 'assumed knowledge' in a lot of workplaces.

    How did everyone go?

I think it depends on the number of people taking the subject. From memory IPT only quoted top 10 as there were less than 10,000 students; for subjects with more than 10,000 I believe it's top 20. Less than 1,000 students is top 5.

    iOS 5

iCloud feels unreliable so far but I do like being able to access my purchases history from any iTunes machine or iPhone. Don't really see the need for an iCloud email address/calendar/notes/etc since I had my Google account for that which sync'd just fine. I do like new notifications and the...

    MacBook pro?

I've had positive experiences with Apple SSDs (even though I had the Toshiba one!) in both my Macbook Airs. They definitely make the system feel a lot faster and the irony is that even if you have a MBP, the hard drive could be what's slowing you down depending on the type of work or tasks you...

    How did everyone go?

This thread reminds me of back when I did IPT in 2005. After the exam, everyone was talking about how easy it was and how they finished ultra early whereas I was writing right up until the last second before pens down. Then on BoS a lot of people were claiming the exam was easy yet I thought...

doesnt anyone take this subject seriously?

I'm 24 now, and did IPT back in year 11 and year 12. The thing which I don't think people realise is that some of the skills & concepts you learn in IPT are surprisingly useful in the real world. 1. Reading Flowcharts On a regular basis, I meet with clients who have had breakdowns in their...
