    What is 'beautiful about mathematics'

Haha I commented on this reddit post earlier today. For me it is because there is this unique duality between abstraction and applicability. From the pure perspective, we can list any collection of axioms we like, and study the perfect world governed by these axioms. Some might be more...

    Brawl

As well as brawl, does anyone like the original smash64? Comparatively lagless online play is possible through project64k (although some kind of usb controller is recommended).

Really? Not in the version I have, they must have changed the numbering of things. There is no q12d at all in mine. Edit: Oh right, this isn't bos trials :P.

    Complex loci

Sure it can be asked, one can carry out the algebra without having ever heard of an ellipse before. And the graph is certainly nothing beyond what someone who has done "graphing" should be capable of.

What is it like to be at the top?

I don't know if I quite meet your criteria but I can offer some of my experience as a high achiever in mathematics with some olympiad background. Basically mathematics started out just as the easiest way for me to prove myself academically, I can be quite a competitive person and it felt good...

    Coloured Hats.

Great! I missed this! So the expected profit of this strategy is $99.5. I am quite sure this is optimal, as there is no "information passed forward" to #100 he cannot do better than 50%.

    Coloured Hats.

I won't ruin the puzzle (and I don't know the answer yet myself, nor have I tried to prove optimality of my current best solution which I doubt is optimal), but the first three strategies I have come up with have expected profit: $75 ~$83 ~$87.5 respectively. Will be interesting to see how...

    Coloured Hats.

One hundred mathematicians are in a line facing the same direction, each of them wearing a hat that is coloured either red or blue. Each mathematician can only see the colour of the hats of the mathematicians in front of him. Starting from the back of the line, each mathematician announces a...

    HSC 2013 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2013 4U Marathon A few weeks ago I started making a rough compilation of all the questions I have posted on bos (mostly just random keywords that would jog my memory to the question.) Could be useful if I ever tutor or teach again.

    Carrotsticks' MX2 HSC 2013 Solutions

Draw lines from O (centre of circle) to D,E,C. These form two angles a and b. We have sin(a/2), sin(b/2) and sin((a+b)/2) in terms of r since we know the triangle's side lengths. Then we can use the sine addition formula to give us an equation with only variable r, which is easy to solve. Not...
