Re: Chess thread? Pretty unlikely. Am not a huge fan of applied mathematics in general, but nothing is impossible...my tastes may change over time. Right now most of my work is in abstract harmonic analysis, some of it being remotely of interest to quantum physicists. That's the nearest thing...

Perhaps the easiest way to convince yourself of this is by expanding the LHS using your compound angle formulae for sin. I recommend getting a good feel for the symmetry properties of the trig functions though, personally I just visualise the unit circle.
