And we have family friends who had a three-week holiday in america - they said that there is vending machines everywhere you can buy this 'whipped cheese', similar to soft drink vending machines.

They allso had an eating competition of it, which is pretty bad

It's not enough to just look at the figures comparitively. While US aid may appear to be huge, proportionally it is stingy - or was. Australia's aid is proportionally higher.

In general, the US has incurred a large debt to the UN, being one of the few members to repeatedly fail to pay UN fees. In general aid, the UN recommends that countries should donate approximately 2% of their funds to aid, however the US donates roughly 0.4%. While 0.4% of US resources towers over 2% of, say, New Zealand's resources, it is proportionally inadequate. That's what my main problem with the US rewaction to the tsunami is.

Yeah, but this is a general trend in America's spending, not just in the post-Iraq period. Just personally, I don't see Iraq as an excuse to avoid aid anyway.

What unnerved me a little bit was how the Amercian Government made a point of saying they were helping these people although they were from Muslim countries... I found that statement, I think made by Colin Powell just not the most genuine thing said during a time where it wasn't about policitcal or religious agendas but just helping other human beings.

very very true, and while we're on that topic, Muslim Arab nations (most notably Saudi arabia) have given hardly anything to the tsunami relief effort.

and as for America being stingy, so untrue, u only need to see what China gave to put it all into perspective

They showed images of people jumping out of buildings, but what u have to remember is over in america if they showed a dead body it is possible that a family member could see it and get upset.
By the way, why do YOU give aid? It is because you like it because it makes you feel good, don't kid yourself.

i find it odd that you can forget all the injustices that the American government has forced upon marginalised communities in recent history just because they gave a measly $500 million in aid...this is mere pocket change to the greatest superpower in the world. While I am glad that they have donated money at all, the fact remains that a country who spends $10 million an hour on the war in Iraq could dig a bit deeper.
Don't get me wrong...i have the greatest respect for the majority of the American people. I just think that the government is the anti-christ.
Also, what do you all think of the $1billion in "aid" that Australia sent? How many Australians (and people all over the world, for that matter) do you think realise that this is a loan, not a donation (like the Australian people have given so generously), and that the Indonesian government will have to pay it back in a couple of years, when they are redeveloping their country, and when such financial draining could collapse their economy.

A large group of Australian's will be dead before it is repaid in full. Also there was donations in that $1 billion to provide immediate relief.

There is also more to aid than just cash. Logistical support through the use of equipment is also needed, this is one of the areas in which the USA specialise at.

America's cheapness in money has been going on for alot longer than just the Bush Presidency, 1995, Australias foreign aid as a % was 0.34, the USA's 0.10.
