Mmmm, whilst on this topic, anyone have results for the addition of beetroot indicator with HCl acid, distilled water and NaOH base? (Or basically any acid or base?)
I missed out on this prac, and I guess I should get this covered instead of skipping it...
Thanks.

how do you actually use it as a natural indicator if i may ask?

just chop it into pieces and boil it? need to do it as a open investigation.

Chop it up, mash it with the mortar and pestle, add methanol to break open the plant's cell membranes so that the red/purple dye (forgot what it's called) can escape the cell, collect the dye, then test it on a base, distilled water, and an acid.

But as I didn't collect the results, does anyone else have them? Like, what colour did the base/acid/water change when the beetroot indicator was added?
Thanks.

We used just mashed up some red cabbage with a mortar and pestle and strained it through a filtering apparatus with water, and presto. Acid-base indicator.

We ripped some flowers from the school's el cheapo garden and we used them as indicators and the more vivid the colour the better its ability to indicate whether a substance is acid or base.

The pH range for beetroot is usually >10 but it may change according to the concentration of the solution.

Now I need to research and make 3 indicators myself. I have heaps of food on the list, like berries. I'm having trouble finding HOW to prepare them though, all I find is red cabbage.
You need to extract the pigment. Ground a sample with sand and acetone. Gravity filter. Run thin layer and column chromatography if possible. Dilute.

METHOD:
1. peel beetroot
2. chop finely
3. put into blender with 100mL of distilled water
(i feel like im giving you a recipie ..lol... n i dont even cook!)
4. strain mixture into beaker
5. 3 identical test tubes with 3mL of the following substances:
1. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) (stong acid)
2. Sodium chloride (NaCl) (neutral)
3. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (strong base)
6. place 3 drops of beetroot indicator into each test tube and record colour change

RESULTS (colour change):
HCl - PINK
NaCl - DARK RED
NaOH - YELLOW
