White House may use Wall St bailout fund for car industry

The Bush Administration is now contemplating drastic action to save America's three biggest car makers, after a $US14 billion rescue deal broke down in the Senate.

The White House says it is considering using the some of the $US700 billion Wall Street bailout fund to prevent the car manufacturers from failing.

"From recession to depression, for God's sake, I hope the President acts."

The Bush Administration has already warned that 1 million jobs may be lost if the car industry implodes.

President-elect Barack Obama is urging the White House and Congress to find a way to give the American car makers the short-term help they need.
