Hey,

I heard (from Medentry) that due to UAC changing from UAI to ATAR that USyd needs to modify the way they select combined med students. I heard it was because if they lowered the cutoff from UAI 99.95 to ATAR 99.90, too many people will be offered interviews (which are there just to make sure you're not insane) and therefore too many people, not enough space.

So they're incorporating UMAT into the selection process as well.

I was wondering if anyone's got anymore detail on this.

Does anyone know what the intake for combined med will be this year?
Will people still be able to get that 10K scholarship?

Thanks,
Rheyn

I'm not sure, but from some pretty reliable sources at the University the ATAR cutoff is predicted to be the same--99.95, because the only difference is that the 100s have their marks reported as 99.95s, so the same number of people are still at 99.95 "and above".

Not sure about UMAT, didn't hear about that. Also not sure what intake for combined med is, but it's usually about 15 or so people if I'm not mistaken. With scholarships, I'm not sure what they're doing either BUT I do know for certain that IF the 99.95 scholarships are reduced, the money will be redistributed to other scholarships so the same amount of scholarship money is being spent. But the way the lady was talking, it sounded like a real possibility there could be less 99.95 scholarships.

There are actually more people getting 99.95 ATAR than people getting 100 UAI. UAC says that there should be 40-42 people on 99.95 ATAR (as opposed to the 23 people who got UAI 100) and about 60 getting 99.9 ATAR.

Because there are too many .9ers and .95ers to offer combined med to and too little .95ers to offer med to, they have to bring UMAT into the mix.

We might have to wait till they publish a new guideline in this years UAC booklet or when they update their web page.

I heard somewhere else that usyd is offering another combined med (science, i think) from 2010 where ATAR, UMAT and interview will be considered.. Hasn't been confirmed by anyone though..

Its actually pretty simple.
In the past USYD offered interviews for people on 100UAI and 99.95UAI
After the ATAR change there are now going to be the same number of people on 99.95ATAR as there would be if u combine 100 uai +99.95 uai.
No issues.

^^That's what I thought which is true, but there's the issue of the cutoff. Because, let's say there were 40 people at UAIs of 99.95 and 20 at UAIs of 100, so that's 60 at 99.95 and above. Now, with the ATAR, the 20 get pushed down to 99.95, and the last 20 at 99.95 get pushed down to 99.90. So, you still have 40 people at an ATAR of 99.95.

But, if the cutoff is an ATAR of 99.95, there's 40 applicants for a people of 60 places (let's assume there was 1 place for every UAI of 99.95 or 100). You can't lower the cutoff to an ATAR of 99.90 because then there's 80 people combined (40 in 99.90 and 99.95, assuming that the number of people at every increment remains constant except for the old UAI of 100). So how are you going to change the cutoffs? You can't keep the places empty because then you don't get any funding.

easy, lower the cutoffs and give more people a chance! :)

I am aware that they have interviews but they're so easy; a lot of USYD combined Med people say that nearly no-one gets rejected and that the interview is just there to make sure you're not some psychopath.

^^There is no cutoff. It's a grad entry program, i.e. you need to have done a bachelor's degree first (can be any discipline, not necessarily science). Then you need to sit GAMSAT, and then an interview if your GPA and GAMSAT scores meet the cutoffs, then pass the interview. GPA cutoff is 5.5 from memory (don't quote me on that), which is a high credit average.

What is ATAR?
I'll have a guess and say Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank.

I've been studying for UMAT for the last couple months so what have I missed?

Edit, just checked google, how gh3y of UAC
